    Re: Happy Birthday, Mandolin Cafe!

Happy Birthday to the Cafe and a big thank you to Scott! I remember finding the Cafe back in the days of dial-up internet. I don't think any of us had a clue what the next 20 years would bring!

    Re: cheap external pickup

For quick and cheap, google up the Cherub Violin Pickup. Less than $10. I wanted something that I could just put on and remove easily. I clamp it to my Collings MT at the rear of the bottom F...

    Re: Help with Timing

Ginger Baker ain't no part of nothin'. :)
One of my favorite places to be is on the "and" 8th note behind the 4th beat of the measure. I get a lot of side eye.

    Re: Help with Timing

Every style of music has its own 'rules of the road.' My youth was spent in the percussion section which leads to horrors in the eyes of my bluegrass bandmates when I fall back onto my internal...

    Re: Sound descriptions

This would be a great subject for one of the big dealers to make a video about. Get a good player or two with a bunch of new and vintage mandos and play through them specifically talking about tone...
  8. Re: Looking for opinions of Big Muddy mandolins

Setup? I haven't felt the need. I did lower the bridge on my octave to bring the action down a hair, but other than that, they have been good enough for me as is.
  9. Re: Looking for opinions of Big Muddy mandolins

Yes, yes, yes. I don't think you can go wrong with a Big Muddy. I have two instruments built by Mike Dulak, under his previous venture, Mid-Missouri Mandolin - or Mid-Mo. Both are simply...

    Re: Friendly reminder

I've had a couple of experiences with a 'wall of mandolins.' Pick up a nice one and play it while strolling along the wall. The ones that 'sing back' to you are the ones you need to play next!

Re: What has your mandolin been called?

Once upon a time, a nice lady referred to my octave mandolin as a "Lithuanian Banjo." No idea how she came up with that.

    Re: $1000.00? Mandolin

The few Morgan Monroe's I've handled ranged from 'just OK' to 'don't even bother.' Some were real pretty with inlay and such. I wouldn't give over $500 for the best of the best by MM. There are...

Re: If You Don't Perform In Public....

In addition to playing mandolin, I collect antique Venitian glass beads. I never wear them and rarely do I show them to anyone. They serve absolutely no practical purpose. But, they bring me...
  16. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

Different strokes for different folks. For me, electric gives me an opportunity to explore sounds more applicable to certain genres than strait up acoustic.

  18. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

That just makes me cringe. Our high school band has to do a tremendous amount of fundraising to keep the program alive. Imagine the goodwill Gibson could have created by donating those instruments...

Re: Fender Tele Tenor at NAMM

Just noticed Sweetwater is picturing all 3 colors and taking pre-orders for delivery in "just a few weeks."

I was very excited about this model when they showed up at the winter NAMM. Love the look and style! I am somewhat disappointed at the price point. The somewhat similar Northfield Calhoun retails...

Re: New Eastman MD-315 or used Kentucky KM-855

If I were in your situation, I would give the Kentucky very serious consideration. Just looking at the specs, you would be getting a 'finer' instrument. Plus, being at a local store, you can...
