  1. Re: Going out of the country...personal item/carry-on?

Document that you bought it in the US to avoid any customs claims.
  2. Re: A tuner shootout: TC Electronic Unitune vs. Peterson StroboCl

I'm quite fond of my Unitune after poor experiences with some other tuners not directly compared here. It has strobe capabilities, but I find these of less practical use when in a crowded and noisy...

Re: Eastman gig bag on sale again...

I guess, if they sell-out again, the price goes up to $25. :)
  4. Re: So... They seem to think I'm starving and homeless?

IMHO: Take it. Say thanks. Pass it on to someone who could really use it.
  5. Re: Emando players: What do you want in an amp?

$1,000 is a lot of money. I'm sure it sounds good. Can you recommend something in a more-affordable model? Thanks.

    Re: Classical Mandolin

Having switched from violin to mandolin myself, I was amazed that I could play it right out of the box based on the mandolin having the same left hand fingerings as the violin. There is a lot (!) you...
  7. Restorig my Strad-o-line hit a slight snag

My mandolin is all oiled and set-up, it looks good and my tuners are now working well and facing in the right direction... BUT, there is one note -- and only one note -- on the entire fretboard that...
  8. A model: Adding a strap button to the heel.

I was thinking of putting a second strap button on my A-style mandolin's neck to use a guitar-style strap. Is this a wise idea or a fool's errand?

My biggest concern is the longevity of my...
  9. Re: What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

One can find pretty much everything in the New York area... at a cost.

  11. New live video from Andy Statman Trio plus one.

His group shared this one. (PS - That talented banjo player's has spider hands like Jimi Hendrix. :) )

  12. Re: What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

There's a music store by me that does very good work in-store, but that is rare. There's also a really good luthier who works out of his house by me, but I don't know if he does many mandolins....
  13. Re: What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

I have that e-book. Thanks. There's also a great video on how to do it yourself, but I wanted it professionally done.
  14. Re: Where does the strap go on a Strad-o-lin (no end button)?

I see from a previous thread that some folks install one below the tailpiece. I may try that.
  15. Where does the strap go on a Strad-o-lin (no end button)?

My Strad-o-lin now sounds and looks good, but I don't know how to attach a strap to it. What do others do? :)
  16. Re: What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

So it came back all set up, oiled and sounding pretty good. The tuners are even facing the right direction! Worth the expense, as good craftsman service usually is.
  17. Re: What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

Yes, a good set-up is important, but can we be more specific?
  18. Re: Anyone use a Fender Mustang GT40 amplifier?

The Fender modelling amps give you the option of manual settings. The presets are just a quick base if you're looking to emulate a specific popular sound. I previously had a Vox amp that didn't.
  19. Re: Anyone use a Fender Mustang GT40 amplifier?

Thanks. This was just a concern I read in a few reviews of the product. As noted, I have no experience with it. Hopefully, I'll find it in a local store to try out, though not the firmware update.
  20. Re: How to make your own A-style strap from paracord

    Now fixed.
  21. How to make your own A-style strap from paracord

I made a few of these for myself over the years and figure I would share what I've learned over time. I've never had an issue with this design, but do check the slip knots. If you have a great...
  22. Anyone use a Fender Mustang GT40 amplifier?

These things look cool. I like that they use smaller speakers and a closed back to be good at both instrument amplification and playback of music, so one can jam with recordings. Looking for...

    Re: Thick Picks?

Vinny Smith's outdone himself with that one! Heck, I'd give it a try; If it's too hard to use I can always mount it on a cuff link. :)
  24. What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

Granted, I live on Long Island where prices are high, but I was wondering what it runs. I'm having a guy invert my tuners so they turn in the right direction, put on a new set of J74s and adjusting...

    Re: Thick Picks?

I just don't get the appeal of thick picks like the Dawg or Golden Gate. Sounds good when Dawg uses one, but for me it sounds thin. I much prefer an old Red Bear or Wegen or Blue Chip. I'd rather use...
