Craigslist $1400. I don't mind people making a profit, I do it sometimes too, but being sketchy or underhanded about describing it is wrong.

Just FYI, this mando has re-surfaced on Reverb. The seller listed the serial number and fon. I notified the seller, that it was not original, and not from 1921. He stated that he couldn't read the...
And it plays and sound great!
Your welcome. I wish I would have saved myself a 3 hour round trip! But you don't know until you see it!
Went and checked it out today. It's a player grade mando. Worth basically what he was asking. It is a teens model, that has been totally re-necked. Not an amateur DIY job, but not Gibson factory...
Looks like a Cliff Sargent F-5 Copy. Cliff was in CA, so that may be the case. He built some very nice sounding Loar-esqe copies, non were intended to deceive. This is a good deal if it is a...
Playing bluegrass for a living is like any other small business. Some people have the desire to start a business, but it fails in months or years, due to not taking care of the business side of...
Just FYI. This is not a vintage Masterbuilt. This is a newer made over seas model. Still might be a good instrument though. I have a 50's Epi Byron I had converted. Best mandocello I've played.
I figured the number on the headstock was a S.S. # Here's the info:
SISK, HOWARD E. was born 29 July 1918, received Social Security number 316-10-1906 (indicating Indiana) and, Death Master File...
Unless the case is a re-lined case from another instrument (fiddle, lap steel), the case is for sure old. Mandolin doesn't look to be from the 30's, in my opinion. Might look different in person....
Who said anything about profiteering and bogus descriptions, etc? No other repliers brought this person up. The instrument in question is a very rough example of the Gibson tenor lute (which says...
There was a rash of fake F-9's popping up, it's a possibility. The guys at GC would be hard pressed to tell if it's a fake. Update: After looking at the pics, it doesn't look like one of those...

This is a pic of the last 30's A-50 I had. Yes, they are elevated, and so much so that they have a support under the fingerboard extension ala an F-5 or A-5.. If you've never owned one of...
That's not a 20's mandolin. It's from the 30's. It's actually an A-50. The ones I have had, I remember have had a flatter arch. Just be sure the brace is not loose. That would cause the top to...
Just happened to find this while banjo hunting.

It vaporized again! Scamsville.
So apparently this mando is back on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/1942-Collectors-Gibson-F-5-Mandolin-Kalamazoo-Fleur-De-Lis-5020G-40-s-/112133851516?hash=item1a1bb2c97c:g:~xMAAOSwFe5X1wzY

I don't think it will. These have come way down, and this one has some issues, and no case, and no return policy. But we shall see!
Thought I hit send earlier but….The easiest thing to do would be get an inline appraisal from someone like George Gruhn at Gruhn guitars in Nashville. Of course he can't see all repairs needed via...
It just didn't have the same burst as an F5-L to me, and the binding does look more MM like, than an F5-L. But looking at some other 1999 Derrington F5-L's online, they look similar. Sounded ok,...
Yes, I love my now discontinued Cascade Victor. The only problems with ribbons are the need for a preamp with lots of gain or a Cloudlifter (that's what I use in addition to a preamp), and that the...
I played the mando, and had the same questions. Says F5-L, but looks like a master model. The "toured with Haggard" bit is a stretch. It was apparently played by a guy in a band opening for...
Pete is right. Whatever works for you, your mandolin, and the song you are recording. If it's solo I'd try the SM81's stereo. Try one pointed at each f-hole to start. Just watch for phase issues....
I agree. The "The Gibson" inlay looks like late 20's style straight across. They probably would have done a truss rod if it was re-necked, and they weren't doing 3 piece necks at that time either. ...
Got mine too. I agree with all of that as well. But I have to say the build quality and sound is not that far off the US made OF I had. Really sounds good and plays great. Neck is a little chunky,...
