Re: My mandolin got eaten by a Stratocaster.

In the 50s, rock/blues tones came from Fender amplifiers, and pedals didn't come around until the 60s. Just sayin...

    Re: Chinese made mandolins (Northfield?)

I've been playing a carved Shen as my main instrument since 2007. It gets better and better. BTW, Engelhardt went out of business, closed the doors. I think that's a shame.
  3. Re: When did you realize mandolin was your primary instrument?

In bass groups I'm primarily a saxophone player. In saxophone groups I'm primarily a mandolin player. In this group I'm primarily a bass player.

I can't decide if I'm more envious of the picking with Albert Collins or of having a hot girlfriend. Probably depends on how hot...

    Re: CGDA tuning on Mandolin?

It has been done, but usually for electric mandolin. Johnny Gimble comes to mind. The thing is to find C strings heavy enough that they aren't too floppy when tuned up at that scale length. Probably...

  11. Re: Teacher recommendation for left hand technique

His wife, Caterina, teaches an entirely different approach, holding the left hand parallel to the strings. Violin technique comes from the need to support the neck with the left hand. There's no...

Re: Homer and Jethro's It Ain't Necessarily Square

I’ve been told, by Don Stiernberg, that the electric Jethro on It Ain't Necessarily Square is Jethro on guitar. I would say that Don is pretty credible.

There is some of Jethro playing the...

Re: Rot smell on strings how to get rid of it?

Copper can have an odor as it oxidizes, and bronze is primarily copper. I have some bass strings with a lot of copper in the windings, and they will make my hands smell. Just wipe them down often...

Whatever the first three in the Jack Tottle book were. Arkansas Traveler, probably Cripple Creek, maybe Blackberry Blossum.

    Re: Can you teach musicality?

Musicality is simply taste as it applies to all aspects of music. It can be taught, but not to everyone.

  23. Re: Good mandolin choice for woman with small hands

Mandolin requires longer stretches than double bass if you play Simandl on a 41-42" scale.

Some of the old Lyon & Healeys were violin scale, 13". I have one, but it honestly doesn't make that...
