Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

No picture, but I just discovered a cross grain fracture in the X brace on a gut string Martin I've been working on. It's right by the foot of the bridge. Aargh.

The top is much too flexible in...

    RIP Arthur Stern

I haven't seen it mentioned here, but Arthur was a friend to everyone in the mandolin world and a brilliant artist. He was a long time forum contributor and a fountain of knowledge and experience...

    Persimmon mandolins?

I picked up some beautiful North Carolina persimmon from the Hampton Brothers yesterday for my new Carolina Quartet project.

Has anyone built an F5 using persimmon for the back and ribs?
  7. Re: Building the Double Top Mandolin in the Israeli Style

Thank you, that is very interesting!
  8. Re: Building the Double Top Mandolin in the Israeli Style

Note that the inner top is free-floating beyond the false sides. It is spaced about 1/8” away from the sides and the tail block. A sound hole was cut before the inner top was glued in place.

    The...

  12. Re: "This mandolin was intact until my son sat on it"

It was probably fairly far gone before his son sat on it judging by other aspects that one can see. I suppose it is a late 40s A50 and its tuners, tailpiece and bridge are worth more than $100. It's...

By the way, I'd be surprised if the elevated fretboard by itself has much of an effect on the sound, because that portion of the top is isolated by the sound hole anyway. In many ways the...

Ditto what Marty said. Also, though it may go without saying, I would recommend using an X brace instead of the Gibson-style lateral brace that tends to come unglued.

    I've built several of these...
