I'll second considering a hobo as well. I couldn't be happier with mine.
My first mandolin was a sub hundred dollar f style feeling. It was very quiet and needed a set up but good value for the money.

That's actually where I bought it. They didn't have any beaver tails in stock so I didn't get to compare, but the guy at the store told me they have a pretty similar sound....
