    Does it really have a two-piece top instead of a bent top? The photos make it look as if the top's wood grain isn't continuous across both sides of the bend. If so, that's the first "bent top"...

    The armrest I installed on my 1914 Gibson A reminds me to hold the instrument in the correct position. Otherwise, I tend to hug it, the way I played the Carl Fischer bowlback I learned on.

    I've been taking Naproxen twice a day for years to cut the pain in various arthritic joints -- including the bases of both thumbs. I hope that works for you.

    I have cleaned my mandolin thoroughly several times and the spot never reappeared.
