  1. Re: What do Famous Musicians Recommend about Practicing?

Tomo Fujita has ton's of good advice on his YT channel. Focuses on guitar, much is useful for mandolin as well.

    Re: help with feedback

    My 2 cents:
A tube amp will compress the sound. This is great for electric guitars. But any compression will increase feedback when used with a microphone.

    Re: Another Thomastik Infeld Question

Wein is German for wine. But we like it very much here in Wien/Vienna, too. ;-)
  6. Re: New mandolin, is there something wrong with the nut?

To me neither. Looks like plastic to me.

I had to finish a gig with only 7 strings due to a nut failure early this year. Luckily our instruments provide a sufficient level of redundancy ;-)

    So...

    Re: 3 instruments-One mic

I used to use one clip on mic on mandolin and banjo.
Best result on my banjo was, when I pointed the mic exactly at the rim. So it partly picked up the head and partly the resonator. The downside...

    Re: electric hum

    Likely this was coincidence.
My guess would be a loose/poor contact somewhere in the electric path from the pickups to the amp...

Re: economical option to record myself

    +1

We use this at band rehearsal. Then we share the recordings for practising at home.
I would not use that for producing a CD, though ;-)

Re: Eastwood Airline solid electric mandola

Regarding 1: Same story here. So I restrung my Airline as octave mandolin. One octave below normal mandolin is in the same range like the guitar. And yes, mine is surf green ;-) Gauges which work for...
  15. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

    Thanks for this interesting thread!

To me these are different still similar instruments:
Electric mandolins, electric mandolas etc, F-style acoustics, Neapolitan mandolins,... - we need an excuse...

    Re: Picking faster?

Try to go from 120 to 121 rather than to 140. Getting faster is s slow process ;-)

By the way as for others, 120 is damn (too) fast for me. There is only one tune that I can play at 120 and this...

    Re: eq pedal with boost

To shed some light on some sound tech myths:

    Impendance matching:
Means that the sink of a signal (e.g. preamp input) has the same impedance as the source (e.g. the PU).
    With matched impedance...

Re: Do people ever change their strings?

I belong to the category 'lazy frequent string changer'. That is, I very much like the sound of fresh strings but do not always change them as often as I should.

On the other side sometimes after...

    Re: radius fretboard why?

This is for sure true. And whatever I got used to is what I like the best.

That said, I have to add that I have several instruments with a radius (mandolin, electric bass) and several with a flat...
