Re: Six to eight string conversion

That's a lot of work, very nice, projects like that are fun.
  2. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

For me, mandola was a gateway to tenor guitar.

    Re: Fixing a microphonic pickup

Here is the end of the story: bought a new pickup, put it on, clicked the same, sounded worse, put the OEM pickup back on, in lowered position it is ok, the end. :-)

Re: 8 string solid body playability

Eastwood (I own many, but not their 8str mando) seems to favor larger frets, which I like.

    Re: Caterina Lichtenberg‘s On-line course

You mean the artist works one?

    I am a subscriber.

While has some intro material, it pretty much assumes you can read music and have some facility with mandolin already.

    It's strengths...

    Re: Acoustic pedal

My plan is to use it to temporarily get an acoustic tenor guitar sound from my electric, while I wait 7 months for my acoustic to be built.

I listened to the demo videos, I think that mistake is going to cost me money. :-)

    Re: Fixing a microphonic pickup

Replaced the cover today, no difference, old cover was not magnetic after all.

Not sure what it is now, pickup is set low so I don't hit it often, maybe that's enough.

    How is a fully potted...
  10. Re: Electronic tuner: guide, or unquestionable authority?

FYI, I only use the tuner for one string in each course, matching them is always by ear. I also use a tuner for 12th fret setup.

I don't like tuners that aren't super-accurate any more, my ears...
  11. Re: Played an EARNEST Junior Deluxe 5-string electric mandolin to

Glad you enjoyed it, maybe lowering the pickup could get it out of the way. I have done that on both of my electrics that came with high pickups.

My debut as a tenor guitar player

Played my electric 4-string (CGDA) in our worship band this morning. Did mostly basic lead-guitar-style stuff, and it wasn't terrible.

I used a PRS Archon Clean amp sim in the HX Stomp to get the...
  13. Re: Electronic tuner: guide, or unquestionable authority?

I got on the super-accurate tuner bandwagon. Now tuning is a matter of how much time I want to spend, I can get close quickly, getting everything dialed in more accurately takes more time, the tuner...

Re: Ordered a custom tenor from Davy Stuart

Well, if you want a 4-string in 5ths in the mandocello range, my usual method is to remove four strings from an 8-string, kinda why I ordered from Davy Stuart. :-)

Re: What has your mandolin been called?

I brought in a mandostang once, it got called a mini-strat by the band mates.

Pava's are high on my list of MASable mandolins. Played a great blondie in a store once, never forgot it. :-) Congrats!

Re: Ordered a custom tenor from Davy Stuart

CGDA an octave below a mandola is called a mandocello AFAIK, and they are being produced today, and TMS has some for sale. :-)

I found a nice electric one here:...

Re: Ordered a custom tenor from Davy Stuart

I have an electric (Eastwood Airline Mandola, 18" scale), that I converted to a tenor GDAE, strings are 13.5p, 22w, 33w, 52w (thats about 15 lbs per string). It is everything I could have hoped for...
  19. Re: Tuning for Eastwood airline Octave mandola

    I did that, the strings I used were 13.5p, 22p, 34w, 52w.

It works good as a 4 string with those gauges too.

It needed some nut work and bridge adjustments to make those gauges work.

Re: Ordered a custom tenor from Davy Stuart

It will be tuned as an OM with GDAE, that's why the skepticism as to whether it would work at all, for mandola tuning the stock design would have been fine and no need for a custom.

    If he makes it...

    Re: Musoo/Eastwood mandocaster

    An Eastwood knock-off, now that's new. :-)

Eastwood makes decent playable instruments out of the box for budget $$.

    Wonder how the musoo compares.

Ordered a custom tenor from Davy Stuart

Won't arrive until around next March, this will be a necro thread by then, hopefully I can find it.

It will be an 18" scale instrument, based on his 18" flat-top mandola, with a larger but still...

    Re: OM Setup

To me they are pretty similar, nut height is slightly higher than a mando, and bridge height is determined by string buzz like always, so nothing unusual about an OM that I know of. String tension...

    Re: Multi-track Recording?

A DAW + a computer is the easiest (HW easiest, but have to learn the software, but there are many tutorials on the web).

Cubase elements + Scarlett 2i2 + a good mic has been all I need.

    Re: Fixing a microphonic pickup

Wow, those covers are a perfect fit, I'll give them a try.

I am pretty certain the OEM covers are ferrous, which is the root of the problem. Replacing the covers is the best solution.
