Re: Strings Catching on Higher Fret

Well, the top could be sinking. The neck could be bending. The truss rod might not be tightened. The bridge could be too low. Or the fretwork is poor.

That's in order of ascending likelihood.
    Get...

    Re: Mandolin insurance?

Agreed. Don't insure, save. My homeowner's policy wants about $20/month to add $5k of coverage for my camera equipment. Forget about it. I've bought it before, I can buy it again (eventually - I...
  3. Re: From Violin to Mandolin - Questions

I cannot recommend Eastman oval hole mandolins. While their f-hole instruments are generally good values, their oval-hole instruments are quite weak.

Re: Am I being to Critical on New Mandolin

Wait.. that's a problem. You're supposed to pay a lot extra for bearclaw!

Really though, wood is a natural material. Any mandolin, at any price point, will show evidence of the natural materials,...

    Re: Sprayed Glue?

That looks like a poorly-fit joint or gap, and good old fashioned PVA. Maybe thinned a bit and brushed on. Or maybe masked with a template and brushed on, hence the clean-ish-looking ring of glue.

    Re: Eastman - back/neck separation

Everything, even the best made stuff, fails eventually. If you have 500 perfect dovetails, some of them will fail long before they would be expected to fail, based on a normal distribution of units....

    Re: Sultans of Swing tab

Nothing wrong with that. Harry is the lead, and has 6 PRS's to prove it. Probably seven, since it's the start of a new month.
  8. Re: Semi-accoustic Mandolin build + various questions

Or sandpaper on the top of any ground cast iron tool table... Table saw, band saw, etc.
  9. Re: How to enhance mando for legato piece

Picking further up the fretboard (15th fret or so) can result in much more sustain and more perceived legato tone due to less sharp attack. I basically never use tremolo to try to get sustain, I see...

    Re: "tinny" A string?

The specific area under a string isn't going to impact a specific string. A mandolin top being too thin can make the treble strings sound tinny. As can a back being too thin. Or the top or back, or...
  11. Re: Learn to play multiple instruments at once?

I'm pretty ADD... learning another instrument helps me with mandolin, because it gives me something to shift my focus onto while also reinforcing things that help with mandolin.
    Such as:
    - finger...

    Re: black residue?

..Or buffing compound? I'd be surprised if this basic mandolin had glued-in frets.
Mineral spirits or naptha (lighter fluid) will wipe it right off if it is buffing compound, with no risk of harm...

Re: F5 with an OVAL hole?

Sure, you can make a "hybrid F-5" with an oval hole and a 14th or 15th fret joint, and the higher-waisted bridge position that comes with that.
Most kits provide thick enough tops that you could...
  14. Re: Gender and age distribution of mando players

Hi Elbent! As another perspective, in my mandolin setup and repair business, I see about 50/50 men and women bringing instruments for me to adjust or fix. Maybe 30% under 40 years old, the majority...

    Re: Small rattle in soundboard...

Wow, I always wondered what a "deal table" was. I assumed it was a kind of farm table, but it really means "pine table"? Huh. Makes sense. I'm writing this from a 200-year-old deal table right now...

I hire him to play all my mandolins for 2.5 hours before I ship them out, so I'm all good on that front.

    Re: Mandola string heights?

Hi Brad, I'd shoot for .005 at the first fret (or lower if possible) and .050" (treble)- .070" (bass) at the 12th fret is where I'd start, with as little neck relief as possible. Assuming a "mandola"...
  19. Re: looking for 2-point f-hole mandolin plans...

You can take an f-style mandolin plan and mirror the shape to get a symmetrical two-or-three-pointed instrument. Other than that and the off-center neck joint some (better) f-style mandolin plans...

Re: Pores Reappearing in French Polish

Well... french polish is never a glass finish. You got a great finish, by any standard. Nothing wrong that I can see. If you want plastic, build with plastic!

    Re: Monitor suggestion for DAW

I had a potential customer send me a very long, very detailed critique of the tone of all the mandolins I had made to that date. They had very specific opinions about the tone, and strong opinions...
  23. Re: Stew mac -- waverly f-style mandolin tuners

Yep - almost certainly what Adrian is pointing out. I bet the tuner mounting holes aren't perfectly drilled (the little screw holes, not the post/bushing holes).
