    Re: Truss rod or not?

Kick a$$ looking cool modern mandolin!

I'll disagree: truss rods are NOT insurance. A poorly designed and built neck can have all the truss rods and strengthening materials and it will still warp...

    Re: Top and back graduations

No offense intended to anyone here or in other threads, but I secretly get endless entertainment from all the thread comments about the Griffith Loar by people who have never played it. ;)

    Re: Warps in bent sides

I'm a big fan of solid bending forms, but they use up almost a full sheet of mdf.

My first thought is did you cook them a second time? Ribbony mahogany does the same thing you showed- bends good...

    Re: Top and back graduations

That's the number one reason why I respond here and ironically the number one reason for getting flamed out by folks who seemingly have never built one instrument but know more than my...
  10. Re: Experience in Using Effects on Acoustic Mandolins

I've tried a LOT of distortion / overdrive pedals and the only one that really works well with a piezo pickup is a Sparkle drive. It is like a tube screamer with a clean channel mix.

    As for my ...

    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

That is what the entire mandolin cafe has turned into these days- a bunch of grumpy old men talking about mandolins.

A wise old man should understand better than most the limited amount of time...

    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

Having built many fanned fret instruments and played at least fifty by multiple builders, I'll say that it is useful for more complicated instruments like citterns and 5/6+ string basses, but it is...
  14. Re: Nitrocellulose reactions with tuning machines

I wondered about that; possibly, but here is no sign of lubrication-very dry nitro. Whatever it is, the quality is strong enough that you could do a nice 'burst
  15. Nitrocellulose reactions with tuning machines

No mandolin content here, but very applicable to this forum and the collective knowledge of some of the folks here.

I pulled these circa 1940 Epiphone tuning machines off a (rather large)...

  20. Re: How to adjust the bridge on a fanned fret 10 string mandolin?

Setting up the bridge on a ten string fanndola is the same as any other instrument: make a small adjustment, play it a bit to see if that is the sweet spot, repeat. The bridge is pretty simple....
