  1. Re: Have you EXP74 users switched to XT’s?

regarding XTs, ironically it was the feel that left something to be desired. I've been playing guitar for most of my life but I'm younger so the lightly coated (elixir nanoweb, dd ext) string is my...
  2. Re: Recommendations for a quality but affordable mandolin

    exactly!!
  3. Re: Recommendations for a quality but affordable mandolin

I'm a little biased, but find yourself an american made (quartz or better) breedlove (discontinued). They are an incredible value at the price point people are looking for these days.

    Re: D'Addario picks?

That's a nice service for you to do for others, and it's generous, whether you view it as a lot of work or not. I disagree on what the value added is worth, but everyone is in a different position....

    Re: D'Addario picks?

Yes on the bow comment, but agree to disagree on the rest. Whether or not the materials cost $5 or so per pick, the little industry of boutique pick makers is just an example of the "invisible hand"...

Mark- if you see this, two Q's for you

    1. I noticed that you and some others have made the first real jump to a Pava. Can you describe the decision process.... they seem like a good value???

    LastMohican,

What are you getting sound wise from the F5S that is over and above the sound of the FF? Could you compare them for me?

    Describe your MAS progression

OK so my eyes have been opened how big a difference a good mandolin makes in terms of the enjoyment of this hobby.

A couple years back I played an entry Eastman (315- which I realize has a good...

Re: Are People Buying Less Mandolins Now?

Regarding whether fewer mandos are being purchased right now it would be interesting to know... I can say that the time at home as made me antsy, which has resulted in a lot of accessories purchases.
  13. Re: anyone change their plain steel high strings faster than wrap

    thanks guys,

to clarify... for whatever reason, the plain strings are discoloring/griming on me REALLY quickly- like within two weeks of solid playing and it doesn't wipe off easy. Anything you...

Re: Why do you like the picks you like?

Recently went through that pick whole journey and here's what i ended on and why-

Shape- tri corner '346' shape - kinda what you referred to in your original post- is my favorite shape as it's the...
  15. anyone change their plain steel high strings faster than wrapped

    what the title said.

Admittedly it never occurred to me to do for acoustic guitar, but I've been using coated strings there forever.

For mando, I'm appreciating the settled in sound of the...

saw those on banjo bens site the other day. How's the sound?
  17. Re: Set up question- intonation on the D string

    Thanks both!

I did the capo thing, and the D string was still pulling sharp so i filed a tiny tiny bit off the fingerboard facing side. Definitely helped! I think I can get it square on if I go...

  19. Set up question- intonation on the D string

    Hey guys,

I've played mandolin on and off but am now really into it since beginning playing a great sounding american breedlove kf.

From bridge positioning I am able to get good intonation on...

Re: help me build a pick set

Richard- as a breedlove owner myself I realize that 'banjoey' was a really rough analog for what I meant. Think spectrum of instruments where banjo is on one end as midrangey and plucky, and...

Re: help me build a pick set

You're going to get way more depth (volume / sustain of lows) as well as clarity/note separation from the "pluck" attack. What really sold me on the thicker, well polished/machined picks in general...

Re: help me build a pick set

great point- I haven't included those classics yet. I'm so biased in the direction of a pick with a point that I haven't gone out of my way to include one in a buy. That being said, I'm interested...
  23. Re: pickup/mic vs. studio condenser microphone on a Collings MF 5

    Love it man!!

The Schoeps is my hands down favorite sound for acoustic guitar; sounds great w/ your mando. Pleasantly surprised by the blended signal- was it hard to get it phase aligned or...
