    Re: A Mandolin Strap question

All of the above recommendations are good.
I’ll add a more generic idea for anyone who needs a different F-style strap and has some little bit of confidence in their craft abilities:

    You can buy...

    Re: Two questions

My observations are similar to yours.
Why are the two Primetone picks different if make of the same stuff?
Have you compared coal and diamonds?:)
  3. Re: Do You Play ALL of Your Mandolins Regularly?

I have had up to 6 mandolins from time to time as I buy and sell some of them.
I wouldn't keep a mandolin if I didn't want to play it at least every few weeks. I often play one for a few days to a...

    Re: Finger stretch

I suspect that if you rotate your fretting hand such that your fingers are almost parallel to the strings (instead of lying across them), you might well find those notes easier to reach.

Re: Having trouble picking in public

I agree with most of the above, but maybe this is a more structured approach to fearing that you'll screw up a tune or break:

Instead of learning tunes exactly note for note from start to finish...

Re: Small diameter round braided strap source

As mandroid says there are many places to buy various amounts and varieties and sizes of round braided leather that could easily be turned into a nice strap by simply attaching a small piece (or...

Re: Flat Wound Strings = Noisy Mandolin

This probably isn't helpful, but maybe interesting for figuring out 'why?'.

Several years back I used Thomastiks flatwounds and liked them. Out of curiosity, I tried some Pyramid brand flatwoulds...

Thanks, but NO pain whatsoever. My flip phone is actually powered OFF about 90% of the time.

  14. Re: Nut Width for new build - how important, really

I certainly agree with you about the extremes, Jim.
The nut changes I was describing, I'd limit to 1 1/16 to 1 3/16" nuts. 1 1/4" is way out of my universe!
1 & 1/16" is usually my happy spot.

  15. Re: Nut Width for new build - how important, really

Folks worry about nut width a lot. Remember that some of the nut is sticking out each side. The important measurement is the outer-to-outer measurement of the strings. If needed, you can make a...

    Re: Grommets

In James tailpieces, the strings should lie firmly on the rubber O-rings.
This should eliminate the need for grommets or leather.

  20. Re: needing help with using leather dyes on a finish. and help?

I've never finished a whole instrument, but I've done many speed necks after sanding down to raw wood. I've used leather dye that I diluted with grain alcohol to proper color level. And then I...

    Re: dents in the neck

Might be a perfect time to do a 'speed neck' if you're into that sort of thing. That would allow some sanding and smoothing.

Other method I've used on small dings on mandolin tops (haven't used...

Re: Odd problem with treble pairs

I'd check to see if the E & A strings are actually leaving the very front edge of the saddle. If one slot has a tiny hump in it, then the strings in a pair could have a tiny difference in scale...
