Re: 4 string mandolin? Is it even a mandolin?

    Magnus,

So how does the volume on your 4 strings compare to your previous 8 strings? Did you have to adjust your build or is it basically the same construction you used previously?

Re: 4 string mandolin? Is it even a mandolin?

    Hi,

I’ve always wondered in terms of acoustic mandolin what is the effect of eight strings versus four in terms of volume. I’m not a physicist, but intrinsically feel that an eight string mandolin...

    Hi,

Sounds great from another player I’d never heard of. There’s 4 tracks from the CD on YouTube if folks want to sample it.

    Hi,

They are all free when they first go up, so you could have listened to them all for no charge. He only switches to selling them after they’ve been up for some months.

I’m surprised these podcasts have not been discussed more. I’ve enjoyed them all.

Maybe folks don’t know about them.

  10. Re: comparison: 1994 Gibson F5 L vs. 2022 Anton Krutz F5

    Hi,

Don’t really hear one as better than the other. They both sound good mandolins. As always it’s subjective, I would go with the one, YOU think is best.

  11. Re: Northfield's $200 Surcharge For Wide Nut?

    Hi,

I presume that it’s not just the nut that’s wider, but also the neck. Then smaller production runs, hence higher costs. The increase in cost being down to overhead costs, rather than material....

    Kevin,

Thanks for posting. Was that Cathal McConnell I spotted playing quietly in the shadows? Does not look any different than the last time I saw him 20 years ago when I lived in Edinburgh. I...

    Hi,

I think the UK market for mandolins is quiet just now and of course it’s always been pretty small. I’ve advertised a few instruments recently at what I thought was a fair price and had few...

Re: A Question for Thomastic Infeld Aficionados

    Hi Ray,

Sounds like you’ve got the light ones. They are 9 - 30. I use the mediums which are 10 - 32 with black binding, and heavies which are 11 - 34 with green binding.

    Only used the lights...

    Hi,

Put a wanted ad in the classifieds here. Try and be specific and say what you want in terms of flattop/archtop, f hole/oval hole, price range, etc.

    Hi,

Tombigbee Waltz is one of my favourites. A lot of people tend to think it’s about a person, but it’s about a river in Alabama. Mike Compton does a great version.

Re: New Blackwood and WRC 2-point mandolin

    Davy,

Nice tailpiece. Looks good and easy to use. Don’t know why more luthiers don’t choose to use that type. Must be the Gibson influence.

Re: Red Diamond vs. Gibson F5L or MM

    Hi,

If I had to choose, I would go for the Red Diamond, but if I had the Paganoni and was as happy with it as you, I would not even be looking.
