    Re: G(I) chop to 3 or 4-finger D(V) chop?

Easier said than done ;) . Pinky wants to move with the ring finger. I'm working on it ...

Re: Oiling your pick: a tip from Albert Bellson

I often polish my picks with automotive polishing compound. It makes them very smooth and helps them glide effortlessly over the strings.

Lately my pick of choice has been the large triangle...
  3. Re: Micing my Farmers Market/Retirement Home Bluegrass band

I'll agree with the single condenser mic idea. I play with a group of folks and we do occasional gigs (farmers market's, parties, etc.). We have this Yamaha PA that has some level of feedback...

    Re: Music Streaming service question...

I'm pretty happy with Spotify. We have a family plan that allows up to 6 devices. I can find all the bluegass, folk and Americana that I want to listen to, or play along with. I like being able to...

    Re: About my pick grip

This thread really caught my interest. I've always relied on an open right-hand "floating pinky" style (guitar and mando).

Today I made an effort to try a more closed right-hand while practicing....

Re: Web based backing track tool?

I looked at iReal Pro. I may eventually switch since it's a one-time fee and available for Android too.

What is the song library like? As you may know Strum Machine is centered on bluegrass and...

Re: Web based backing track tool?

I see myself doing the same thing. It's huge help for me now, and I see improvements in my playing already. I'm sure I will eventually move on.

Re: Web based backing track tool?

    Strum Machine (https://strummachine.com/).

I've been using it and it's pretty good. Not crazy about the subscription model though.

It's simple to use, and has lot's of functionality for a...

Re: See think play to auto feel play

I've been working with the Strum Machine backing track tool (www.strummachine.com).

I put on a simple song that I know well (Angeline the Baker, or Bury Me Beneath the Willow) at a slow tempo.

Re: Tony Rice Interview April 9/2019

I love Tony's music. It was interesting to listen to this conversation, but he sounds a little cranky :)

Re: Speed exercises with Chris Henry.

I've incorporated these into my practice routine. They are very helpful.

I recently used the pattern as the basis for a break during a jam and surprised myself.

    Re: Working on my chop

What chord voicings are you using? Are you hitting the low strings consistently?

I'm trying to develop my chop as well. Sometimes I can get that clean, deep driving sound, and sometimes I...

Re: How do small bands do the finances?

We all have day jobs. Personally, I'm not in it for the money.

At the moment, the wife of one member is our "manger". She is holding the money in a band fund that we use for expenses and...

    Re: Training the Mind

Timely topic. Items 1 and 2 have been on my mind lately.

Sometimes while playing or practicing, I'll have a totally unrelated thought ("I should pick up some milk on my way home") and blow it.

    This ^^^^

Look at FFcP (Four-Finger Closed Position) www.mandolincafe.com/eschliman1.html

Patterns that can be moved all over the fretboard.

Re: 1 year of online lessons

I have the Artistworks subscription. The lessons are very good, and there is tons of material.

However, I don't use it as much as I would like. If I had a computer in my practice area I would...

    Re: Memorizing the neck

I agree that patterns and relationships are more important than memorizing note names (at least that's what's been working for me).

The pentatonic scale is great, but it's easy to get stuck with...

Re: Should I upgrade to a better instrument

I agree that the bridge position looks odd. However, that's where the intonation is correct. I just fiddled with it again (harmonic at the 12th same as the note on the open string).

Re: Should I upgrade to a better instrument

Thanks for all the replies and advice.
