    Re: A. Alberto - Kleine Mandolinen-Schule

Oops. I see this now in Alex's post #15. Would be very glad to know the source of this information.

    Re: A. Alberto - Kleine Mandolinen-Schule

Hmm, I wonder. The Wikipedia article tells us Albert published early compositions under the name Enrico (sic) Alberto, and founded before 1900 the Milan Mandolin Club, and that after 1900 he was...

    Re: A. Alberto - Kleine Mandolinen-Schule

Thank you for that, Sheri! It's nice to know that our mystery mandolin pedagogue is none other than Heinrich Albert, well known to classical guitarists as the editor of most of the classical-period...

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

New on the Cafe classifieds today is this Antonio Grauso mandolin:

    177971

It's a new name to me, and a nice looking instrument. Have we seen anything else by this maker? Apparently he was an...

    Re: Loar-period A-Jrs.

Here's the fingerboard on mine. Don't know if I've seen another like it, with the sapwood and heartwood together. Must have been the cheapest ebony in the pile, but it's a nice look.

    Re: Loar-period A-Jrs.

Nice! Here's mine, with original bridge and fingerrest.

    177904

Probably from 1924. I got new frets on it a few years ago, and now it plays very nice. And a new nut gave me a little wider...
  7. Re: Chord notation questions re + - and o

In a theory class there's a distinction between the diminished triad (g#-b-d) and the diminished seventh chord (g#-b-d-f). But in my long experience I've never seen a pop or jazz arranger actually...
  8. Re: Another Question for the Theory Geeks (no mandolin content)

Good example. You could write it in 9/8, but no one would bother. Simpler to just think of it as swing feel.

    Re: Chart

    Looks to me like:

    Bmaj7 / C#-7 (F#7/E) | B/D# / E-7 A7 | D#-7 G#7 C#-7 F#7 | Bmaj7

    Sounds right too... :)
  11. Re: Another Question for the Theory Geeks (no mandolin content)

9/8 gives you three beats each subdivided in three.

So the beat is the dotted quarter note and the tempo is about 116 beats per minute.

    It's a waltz.:)
  12. Re: A.F. Anderson 12-string Mandolin made from old, 1660 London p

Yeah, lots of free pianos around, though probably not many built from 200-year-old Brazilian rosewood.

Beautiful old Hammond organs are also now worth next to nothing!
  13. Re: A.F. Anderson 12-string Mandolin made from old, 1660 London p

I hadn't heard this, but I do recall a rumour from the seventies or so that a well-known British guitar builder was going around to country auctions buying old rosewood pianos (19th century...
  14. Re: A.F. Anderson 12-string Mandolin made from old, 1660 London p

A few more questions: what is the string length, nut to bridge (or nut to 12th fret, times 2)? It's hard to get a sense of scale in the photo, but it looks like this might be longer than a normal...

    Re: Strap button on neck?

Here's what I use. (Laughlin mandolin)

I've had the same arrangement on a Mowry A and one or two other mandolins.

    Re: Strap button on neck?

I would find that a real problem for playing up high on the neck. I've usually had a button put right on the back, into the heel of the neck. It's out of the way and very solid there. Works fine...

And on old 45's as well. For example:

Re: Help me use this diminished lick

Right, the chords of a minor key are based on the harmonic minor scale.

Re: Help me use this diminished lick

That is, C#dim7 over an A bass. (Normally someone else in the group will be playing the bass note, since mandolin has only four courses, and no real "bass" notes.)

    C#dim7 is a diatonic...

    Re: Tabs driving me nuts

Normally tablature notation is like staff notation in that everything that is aligned vertically happens at the same time.

    Re: Ibanez Bowlback 805

    Re: F-style with shorter fretboard?

Hope you both find what you're looking for. In the meantime, putting a capo at fret one on a standard Gibson model would get you very close to a 13-inch scale.

    Could get a little confusing...

    Re: Mandolin missing 46 years

Re: Stradolin "Artist" on ebay. Late 30s?

Pretty sure that's a post-war Strad. Here's a 'thirties head (but with newer tuners).

And I think the model called Artist was the one where the bridge is centered along the F-holes.
