  1. Tennis elbow in the picking arm - how to avoid it?

Hi: having just got over tennis/golf/mandolin elbow in my right arm (I don't play tennis or golf), I'm fairly keen to avoid it happening again. I've read of very experienced pro musicians being out...
  2. Re: Does this guitar speed picking technique work for mando?

Thanks all for all that info!

Nultylynch: my experience with jigs is that there are distinct regional styles. In some places they're played even, with an accent on the 1st beat of the bar and...

    FrDNicholas asked:

Anyone else have no players near them?

They seem to be scarce when I'm playing the bagpipes.

Re: Better machines give better sustain?

I think this just shows acoustics is subjective even though it can be measured. Bill noticed a consistent difference in HUNDREDS of guitars, so for him the difference was clear, whether it's...
  5. Re: Does this guitar speed picking technique work for mando?

I've read that quoted in one or two instructor books, but I'm wondering how true is it, does it matter, and if it does, is it harder to change the sound than to play a pattern that's much easier...

Re: Who is Behind "The Loar" Company?

It may be worth saying the Chinese made and luthier made mandolin market does overlap a little about this price level. A few small makers (certainly here in UK) can make a good quality (probably...
  7. Does this guitar speed picking technique work for mando?

I'm getting a bit stuck with improving my picking speed for fast fiddle tunes etc. I've tried a number of conventional picking patterns, and find some logical and natural and some illogical and...

Re: Price increases coming soon or already here

I suspect mandolin has a strong background constituency of people who want to play fiddle style tunes, and that may support sales. If you're a guitarist, it's a much quicker learn than fiddle, and...

Re: Price increases coming soon or already here

In relation to stock currently carried - the biggest chain of folk instrument shops in UK (easily - 9 shops and a web warehouse), are currently listing 351 regular mandolins (not mandolas etc) in 47...

Re: Price increases coming soon or already here

Some maando stores may carry significant stock. I was looking at the website of one of the better known US mando shops a few days back, they had the Eastman 315 at a good price, listed as cosmetic...
  11. Re: Kentucky KM-276 (or KM-270 or KM-272) case question

I have a KM-250. Assuming it's the same size as the 276, it fits well in one of these ABS hard cases:

    https://www.skb-europe.com/1skb-80a/

It's compact - in fact so compact you won't get a set...

Re: Better machines give better sustain?

The narrow gauge is just what it came with - I prefer the slightly wider and deeper frets on my Kentucky 250. What are the advantages of EVO Gold fretwire please?

Re: Better machines give better sustain?

I've been wanting to try Curt Mangans after many recommendations here, but they appear to be 20 a set in UK rather than around 11-12 for D'Addario etc. Not quite Thomastik prices, but...
  14. Re: Eastman 305 vs Kentucky KM 250, improver reviews

Do you think the oval hole Kentucky 272 sounds different from the f hole 250 etc., Mike?

Re: Rubner tuners on Eastman MD305?

For budget minded folks, there are also some generic Chinese tuners available under various names that are way better than the OE ones and cost about $35-$40.

Re: Your favorite mandolin tuning tips?

You'll see quite a lot of guitarists tune to the key centre chord of their next piece. UK Folk guitarist Martin Simpson tends to talk while tuning between pieces, and I suspect the talking is just...
  17. Eastman 305 vs Kentucky KM 250, improver reviews

Hi: thought I might post some first thoughts on a comparison between these two mandolins. They're pretty direct competitors for the 'first decent mandolin' rosette, so a lot of mando...

Re: Your favorite mandolin tuning tips?

I tune starting with the As, then D G E, then go back and check the As, then readjust as necc. This is from standard violin tuning routine, and I guess it might bias the tuning towards the keys of...

Re: Better machines give better sustain?

The standard way to mute a violin is to clip something heavy (a metal mute) or something lighter with low vibration transmission (eg a leather mute) to the bridge. That makes a huge difference.

Sounds like the mando world may also suffer from instrument envy. They say the first statement made at an expert bagpiper's passing is:

"He was a great piper - we'll not see his like again"...
