    Re: Information on resonator mandolin

    Hello

the sticker is wrong and a recent replacement. It's a National 1930's Mandolin, probably Style N. I think The coverplate "rib" should point toward the tail. I suspect it's an early one as...

Re: Action high - but why, I cry!

As I understand it, wood doesn't shrink lengthways so I'd say nothing is shrinking. A set of Mandolin strings have around 90KG of tension, which presses the bridge downwards and pulls the headstock...

Re: What timber is this please ?

Hi, I'm from West Yorkshire, UK. I've always used "timber" as we had a family Ironmonger's Shop, complete with "Timber shed" although we called the smaller stuff "wood".

Thanks for the help. No chance of paperwork turning up I'm afraid so we'll go with some kinda Rosewood. Cheers

Re: What timber is this please ?

    Good questions, thanks.

It's heavy, has a metallic taptone, it's very stiff and it smells of ........roses. Assuming it's Rosewood, would anyone hazard a guess what variety ?

What timber is this please ?

    Hi Folks,

a local friend and Luthier passed away earlier this year & I'm helping to clear the workshop, which involves identifying out what's saleable.

Re: Another odd Mandolin needs ID

Thanks for the info. I've posted for a friend who isn't a Member, so haven't seen it. The tuners and headstock are clearly made for one another and the strings take a strangely sharp angle as they...

Re: New (to me) Gibson A5L . To scoop of not....

I've taken off the pickguard & some of the problem has gone away, but Bigskygirl has a good point. I'm sticking with it for a couple of weeks & I'll see how it goes. I think there's an advantage to...

Re: New (to me) Gibson A5L . To scoop of not....

Okay, many thanks for the replies. I'll take off the Pickguard and see how I get on with it. I'm thinking I'd prefer to leave it original in honour of Charlie Derrington.

Re: Help! Drowned out by fiddles!

Turn your body away from the fiddles if you can, don't be afraid to change your seat so they're not right in your ear. Any audience can probably hear you perfectly well, but it's miserable when you...

    Re: Best budget mandolin UK

Hi Jillity, going on the pic you posted, that's really not a typical Session. Six squeezeboxes makes it a Squeezebox Band. The Sessions I go to are heavy on fiddles but generally one Melodeon and a...

    Converting left hander to right

I recently bought a left handed Weber Gallatin A which turned up at a really good price.

I tried to order a R\H bridge top and nut from Weber but they said "it doesn't work like that" and it's...

Re: Gibson A50 reftret -any advice ?

Re: Gibson A50 reftret -any advice ?

Good advice, thanks. It has the original bone nut so I'll get him to refit it. I should have thought if this eight weeks ago, all his work dried up but it's busy again now.
