  1. Re: Question about 'hybrid' mandolins in old time

My bad, I thought it was going to be one of those “only this type of mandolin is acceptable” deals. My apologies.

I’m usually Clifftop all week but stay over the hill in the overflow field. Come...
  2. Re: Question about 'hybrid' mandolins in old time

I play a mostly old time mandolin and have taught old time mandolin at a music camp (Allegheny Echoes, Marlinton WV, every year in June [shameless plug]) the last 5 summers. I have seen many types...
  3. Re: Where can I find a tutorial for new camptown races?

The tab is in the classic Bluegrass Mandolin book by Jack Tottle, no video though.

  7. Re: Electronic tuner: guide, or unquestionable authority?

I use electronic tuners and my ears. At home alone, I rarely use a tuner at all. I have the time to better develop my ears in that situation. With most electronic tuners I've had, I end up messing...

Re: PBS documentary on the history of Bluegrass

I'm looking forward to both, but the Burns one in September will most likely be the bigger production by far. I think the KET one, about bluegrass specifically, was timed to be released near the...

    Re: Duffeyisms

I agree about both the volume and stiffness issues. I hadn't noticed the overtone issue but do think my mandolin with the steeper neck angle has a "raw" characteristic to its tone. Maybe we are...

Take Those Lips Away - Doc Roberts

Here is a Doc Roberts tune I'm still working on. I'm playing my 2017 Silverangel A5 style mandolin with a one pc back and redwood top. It's really coming into its own lately.

  14. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

I feel bad for Dave Harvey. I imagine he isn't in the most comfortable position at the moment. I don't know the man but have always appreciated his input here, mutual friends all seem to hold him...
  15. Re: Open chords vs closed chords for chops n chucks

Due to some hand problems, I can't hold the just G chord shape, C shape, and D shape for whole sessions any longer. I use a variety of shapes while I'm playing to minimize stretching my hands,...

    Re: Eastman 304 fretboard extension

I don't think it will be as easy to take it off or cut it down as it is on a mandolin with an elevated fingerboard, as spudpicker discussed above. The fingerboard is glued to the top so cutting the...

    Re: Question for Eastman Owners

I (for now) use the same picks on all my mandolins of the same type, Blue Chip TD 50s on f hole ones, and Blue Chip TD 40s on oval hole ones. I don't have any flat top or bowlback mandolins.
