  1. Re: Who played the mandolin on Allen Jackson's Remember When"

The man that played that session was the same one who's done the fiddle on his records for the last 20 years. None other than Stuart Duncan. It was played on his custom built Gibson that he received...

    Re: removing sharpie autograph

Late reply I know but I have removed red sharpie marker from a cabinet door with plain spray Lysol disinfectant. It'll run off like water color paint and not damage the lacquer.

    Re: Dave Harvey

I spoke with Dave just before Thanksgiving and you are correct. They do not give tours anymore in Nashtown. That ended with the flood and the subsequent move across town.

    Re: My New Kentucky KM-1000B

I just saw this thread today. Sitting in the floor not 6 feet from me is the first black topped KM1000 they ever made. It was a special order by a Saga dealer friend of mine who also ordered a KM1500...
  6. Re: Prominent Atlanta Violin Shop taking on Mandolins!

My suggestion would be to not carry any junk mandolins and hang them on the wall. There are several stores in this area that stock mandolins and they all carry poor quality, poorly set up, poor...

    Re: The forgotten inside?

Not really necessary except for aesthetics. If it's dirty inside, I've poured a little uncooked white rice into fiddles and slid that around in there like moving a frying pan to clean it up a bit.

Re: Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt interview

Bill is done by Glenn Duncan, Flatt, I don't know. A lot of folks could do Lester real good, Gene Wooten among them but I don't know who this one is.
  9. Re: Bill Monroe's Lloyd Loar Mandolin #73987 Returned Post-Repair

I thought it was John too but wasn't certain. I was absolutely sure it wasn't James Monroe, he sounds just like his Daddy, same cadence to his speech.

A few things I wonder are who the "he" is...
  10. Re: Is it wrong to correct a poster's spelling or grammar?

I'm a moderator on a hand engraving forum and as a rule (albeit unwritten) I don't correct anything but the title and only if it's someone I know personally. Meaning, I know them well enough to know...

    Re: Studying Bill Monroe

Pretty cheesy and mechanical. If you want to get immersed in Bill's style you can listen to him or for a more refined sounding Bill-ish player, go youtube Mike Compton doing solo stuff and re-watch...

Re: Steve Gilchrist on Gibson and Varnish...........

Anytime I see finishes artificially "distressed" like that in the photo above, they always look too extreme to be caused by natural aging and therefore phony looking. I've never seen a vintage Gibson...

    Re: Newbie Band Saw Question

The 14" is the distance from the blade to the column which is how vertical band saws are described. Say you wanted a 12" band saw, well, it would have a 12" opening. I have 3 of em and wish one WAS a...

Lynn Dudenbostel is the closest one to you that I know of. But that damage is more than just the point, the underlying wood is chipped pretty bad too. I'd level it and put in a slightly oversized...
  18. Re: "Monroe style" doesnt quite tell the whole story..

I don't have a problem with post #3, they simply made a true statement. It is perfectly acceptable in my view to be opinionated, we all are or why would anyone post anything and why have a forum?...

Any time the graver wanders off the path you choose it is for one of two reasons. Graver control, as in holding the graver tip into the work at a consistent angle, and graver sharpness. The latter is...
