    NMD Stuar Wailing resonator

    Hey cafe’rs.
I’m not going to give this a full autopsy. Just say that Stuart is a UK maker who built this custom instrument for me. It’s sounds way sweeter than I was expecting and gives me a niche...

Re: Upper body exercise and finger speed

I definitely don’t split wood more than I have to and try to avoid vibratory tools at work. As soon as I started mandolin I realised that working out on a punchbag had to go.

Upper body exercise and finger speed

Does anyone else find this? If I do any physical exercise except running or cycling then my fine motor skills I.e fretting and picking just are not on point. I’ve been swimming a lot recently because...
  5. Re: Where to buy a good quality mandolin in the UK

I went to see a 2003 shippey 10 string recently, £1600 with lovely case and Baggs pickup. Great instrument and probably worth the money to somebody, just not me. I'd forward you the details but the...
  6. Re: Is an LDC mic worth it if my room isn’t treated

So I'm currently being persuaded that an LDC is not worth it with the room as it is.
  7. Re: Is an LDC mic worth it if my room isn’t treated

Here is a video as requested. Roast me :-)

  8. Is an LDC mic worth it if my room isn’t treated

    I’m a hobbiest/session player/small time content creator.
I have a few budget mics -SM57, 58, Rode M5 SDC (was a pair but 1 is humming).
They don’t really pick up the instrument(s) right. Thin,...

    Re: Ashbury Quality

I’ve owned 2 and played many. They make good starter up to intermediate instruments. They are proper mandolins for an affordable price with a decent sound.
  11. Re: Stefan Sobell mandolins and other instruments

Man, I need to not look at these threads about Sobbell mando's. I'm going to have spend a few days telling myself things like 'it wont make me a better player'/'there's no substitute for practice'...

    Re: Unlocking the upper octave

    Jeff,
What’s FFcP? I’m sure my google results for the Future Farming and Countryside Programme is an admirable scheme but imagine your FFcP will help my playing more.

    Re: Unlocking the upper octave

I concur with you carmandu2. I don’t see this as being relevant to genre. Although I’ll admit English is easier than Irish (which are the 2 I play the most) The same melody is there regardless, it’s...

    Unlocking the upper octave

I’m putting in some hard work work on my octave mando to play up the neck. The penny dropped that I shouldn’t need to compromise and choose between 2 mando’s as I have the full range available on my...

Re: Guitar songs on the mandolin

The octave mando is half way there but the acoustic guitar is still the richest most singing friendly instrument. IMO it’s the way the chords are laid out with the lowest note being the root note. I...

Re: High End Celtic style in the UK

Wow Sobell looks good. My first impression is that the citterns and mandolas would be mesmerising on their own but wasted in an amateur ensemble.
The regular mando however would be appropriate for...

High End Celtic style in the UK

    Hi everybody,

I play an Eastman 514 and an Ashbury Iona octave mando (English and irish music mostly in sessions and folk/morris festivals).

A structured approach to modern songs

I’ve been playing fiddle music on the mando for a few years now, it’s been great. There are good recognised pathways to take you right through the process.
Now I’m starting to drift towards playing...

Re: Feedback on a magnetic pickup

    Just to close this loop.
I didn’t buy a beater with a magnetic pickup, but I did take the Fishman rare earth blend (mag and mic sound hole pickup) out of a guitar and get it into my octave mando....

    21st century schizoid man

I’m mostly a trad player but I do find the octave mando very adept to metal type music due to the 5ths tuning.
I’m still working on the 20 minutes of insane jazz improv however.

Re: Feedback on a magnetic pickup

Magnetic pickups work by the string 'cutting' the magnetic field and inducing a voltage. This only occurs when the string is in motion i.e. vibrating. Therefore the resonating spruce does not produce...

    Feedback on a magnetic pickup

I’m struggling with feedback on my mandos. They both have K&K twins. I often see cheap second hand instruments with magnetic pickups. Will these be less prone to feedback? I like the idea of a beater...
