Re: Best strings for a Eastman MD505

I have a MD515 and I went through the same choice of strings (except elixiers and thomastik). I settled on the DR11s... But I don't feel that the difference to the J74 or GHS 270 is big - it's hard...

    Re: Headphones recommendations?

I think the first decision is whether you want open or closed headphones. This is pretty much a matter of personal preference. Do you need to cancel out background noise? Then you probably need...
  3. Re: The Shuffle of the Pick - 12 Old-Time Fiddle Tunes

Thanks, Adam! I really appreciate the effort you've put into this...

...I've just bought it... looks like another great resource for Old Time Mandolin...

Re: The "Lost My Blue Chip" Blues

I will probably buy another TD 60, and hope that my daughter will trade my beloved dunlop delrin for two blue chips.

Re: The "Lost My Blue Chip" Blues

A couple of days ago, my 1 1/2 year old daughter stole my favourite pick. A lavender colored dunlop delrin 1.5mm. Hand beveled. Well played in (it had just started to "open up"). I offered my...

    Re: New Awesome iBook

Sorry if I came across too harsh. I'm sure that neither the OP nor the author of the iBook (Eddie Collins) have any bad intentions.

Let me explain why I am upset. The world wide web was created to...

    Re: New Awesome iBook

It should better be called "Bluegrass Mandolin for Apple Users".

I do not understand why anybody would want to limit his/her audience to Apple users only. Not only are they limiting their revenues...

    Re: Files for bone nuts

I play Mandolin, Banjo, Guitar, Ukulele and Dulcimer and have about two dozen stringed instruments in my house. I've also tried the home made feeler gauge files which worked somehow, but it was...
  9. Re: Dunlop Ultex Jazz III 2.0 Are these teardrop shaped?

I wouldn't call them teardrop shaped, but jazz-shaped, or even jazz-III-shaped, to be even more specific...

This is a teardrop shaped pick: tortex small tear drop. The jazz shaped picks have...

    Re: Best fiddle tune book?

I would recommend the late Butch Baldassari's "30 Fiddle Tunes for the Mandolin". It comes with two CDs. It's great for learning to play the mandolin if you come from another stringed instrument....

    Re: Using a plane

I'm currently fooling around with my new veritas block plane... sharpening the blade, putting a micro bevel on it, adjusting the blade and the mouth, etc... before I've owned and tried a hand plane,...

    Re: Snark picks

1.0 is too thin for my taste. I generally don't like picks below 1.5, so their current selection doesn't offer anything for me.

Their "Neo Tortoise" page makes me scratch my head: the Heavy 1.07...

you're right... should have looked at the date first...

...maybe he got frustrated with his maple topped mandolin... ;-)

  14. Re: Kentucky KM-1000 v. The Loar LM-700-VS (and/or LM-600-VS)

A hardwood like maple would be very uncommon for the top of an archtop-mandolin. I've never heard of a mandolin with a maple top. But who knows... as long as it doesn't have a spruce neck ;-)

Re: Most Common Size Standup Bass

The C extension seems to be more common in England and North America. I've seen many German and a couple of Austrian orchestras and never seen a double bass with C extension there. Ordinary four...

It's also worth mentioning that double basses are not standardized at all, especially basses from before the 20th century. As far as playability is concerned, scale length is the most important...

Re: Most Common Size Standup Bass

3/4 is the standard size by far. I would avoid 7/8 and 4/4, they're more cumbersome to play (and carry). Everything that is difficult on a 3/4 bass is significantly more difficult on a 7/8 or 4/4....

Re: Mandolin tuning on a ukulele

I've tried mandolin tuning (GDAE) on a ukulele. I've used the Aquila GDAE set. The E string is extremely thin and broke before I had even tuned up to E. Fortunately the string was long enough to give...

    Re: Shaping and Reshaping Picks

The Golden Gate is fine as it is, if that's what you like. The edge is well rounded, there's no need to polish or to work it over. I'd be perfectly happy with it - however, I'm not into rounded...

    Re: Shaping and Reshaping Picks

I use MicroMesh for shaping my picks. I haven't used it on a BC, though. I've also used emory boards (with 4 sides and 6 different grits), but they loose their bite pretty quick. The MicroMesh stuff...
  22. Re: Replacement bridge - how much of an improvement?

    Re: Custom Fretless Mandolin Build

This mandolin (and the playing) suits bach's music extremely well. I wonder how fiddle tunes would...
  25. Re: Poll - what musical style do you primarily play on mandolin?

    Old time!

But I will some day tackle Bluegrass and Blues, and maybe some Bach (Cello Suites)
