Re: Forgive me....for I have sinned.....

Depending on what kind of music you want to play, a tenor banjo can be a great instrument, with a fairly easy transition from mando. Variety is good.
I have a tenor, set up to play Irish trad with...

    Re: Mandolin Setup Advice

I agree that learning how to do the setup yourself is a great idea. Any wooden stringed instrument can use a tweak from time to time, and it's good to know how to do at least the basics yourself.

Re: cites rules on older instruments

It doesn't have to be called Rosewood to be affected by CITES. Any wood of the Dalbergia genus is a Rosewood. This includes Cocobolo,Tulipwood (not Tulip Poplar) and African Blackwood.

    Re: Intentionally Imperfect Tuning

Do whatever you like the sound of best.
FWIW-piano tuners intentionally tune the double and triple sets of strings a tad off. A piano tuned "perfectly" in tune sounds dull.

Re: Seagull S8 Mandolin armrest question?

Why not make your own? You can get violin chin rest clamps from International Violin. All you need to do is cut a piece of wood to the outline that you want the rest to be, carve and sand it to...

    Re: My first mandolin

I love it. That finish looks antique without a lot of bogus "distressing" marks. You can be proud of this!
Excuse my asking, but are you sure it's set up properly? Since you don't play yet, you...

    Re: Walmart mandolin

    Right, and where's the Pawlonia?
  8. Re: If you could have any mandolin in the world….

For me it would be a Campanella Due (two point). Long before I played mandolin I was (still am) a huge classical music fan. I've always admired the violin and details of it's construction and finish....

    Re: Soft Picks ?

Why not try some inexpensive soft picks to see if a softer pick makes the difference you want? If they'll let you, bring your mandolin to a local music store that has a good range of picks and maybe...

Re: Man....I had a blue guitar...

I once made a Birdseye Maple penny whistle for a customer, custom stained a blue color to match his blue guitar. It was actually pretty attractive.

  12. Re: Should I take my Eastman MD305 on vacation?

Unless she's also a musician and you can play together. Playing music is popular in Israel so you might find some interesting people who can teach you some different types of music and/or jam.

    If...
  13. Re: If you're patient...Avi Avital coming to Baltimore

The Meyerhoff is in the Mt.Vernon section of Baltimore. That neighborhood doesn't seem bad. We've been there a half dozen times now, with absolutely no problems. There's a good parking garage almost...
  14. If you're patient...Avi Avital coming to Baltimore

OK, so it's very nearly a year away, but I'm not going to miss this chance to see Avi with the Baltimore symphony.

Re: Thile at Carnegie May 8

Hmmm... If I started out now, I could be in NYC in time for the show, assuming there were still tickets.

Are they taking that whole lineup on the road?

    Re: Mandolin Try-out Etiquette

I'd say just ask. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. The worst they can do is say no. I'd take it as a compliment if someone asked to try any of my instruments. Naturally,be understanding if they say...
  18. Re: Old banjo fretboard question (no mando content)

I'm no luthier, but why not try automotive spray paint? You could mask it off and easily spray it on. You'd have to clean the frets again but that would be relatively easy (right?). Maybe you could...

    Re: Starting Left-handed or right

In most instances I'd recommend playing the regular way. Each hand needs a particular and different set of skills. A lefty might actually be more agile with their fretting hand. Or not...I"m a lefty...

Re: Zinc alloy tailpiece at Amazon.

I have one very similar on my Fullerton Gloucester. It's chrome, and I painted in the black that yours already has. I haven't noticed a tonal difference, but I figured on that. I do like the looks...
  22. Re: Martin luthier needed in Southern MD area

He's in Frederick, not Southern MD, but Marc Glickman is highly recommended. It might be worth a day trip up here. Frederick is worth a visit while you're in the neighborhood. If you're not able to...
  23. Re: The Traveling Pick Sampler - Anyone Interested?

    Re: Looking to upgrade

I agree-- if you're willing to spend that much, it would be well worth your while to get to a dealer who has quite a few instruments on hand, even if it means traveling a good distance. Play them...
  25. Re: This Gibson mandolin deserves it's own page for its back side

You could at least set it on an instrument rack with the back showing when you're not actually playing it.

The gold top is so visually uniform that turning the mando around and showing the wild...
