The concluding tune of the live "Wny Not?" video set, remastered.
Written by Brazilian pianist and composer Jovino Santos Neto, a Baião on blues changes.

The instrument behaves much like its acoustic response in regards attack and sustain. I had this exact situation, using my favorite mag pickup on a Buchanan 10-string (my earlier acoustic-electric...
The issue should be of interest to e-mando players, but this video misses the main points about pickups.
We can agree it matters where, along the string, you pick. It also matters, where, along...
Muting at the bridge is one method, not the only one. The goal is a short note, fast decay.
A muting style with more "pop" is fingering lightly just on top of the fret.
The left hand technique...
In my professional life there was agreement, among those of us approaching and after 60, that it took a lot longer to warm up to our expected level of facility.
At 70, that is very much the case,...
Here's a remix of the opener from the video show.

Thanks for watching, and the kind words.
The 10-string is a joy to play, although I am still exploring its tonal response. An amazingly comfortable neck, perfect fingerboard, and that deep cherry...
Is your fingerboard flat, i.e. no bowing? Sounds like too little height in those high frets, which occurs if the fingerboard rises. If there is bowing, "relief", the comfortable string height for the...
Thanks. Last two were covers, a retro Zappa-ish melody from my band days in the 70s, which I played on guitar back then. Much better fit to 5-course mando.
Last tune was a baião by Jovino Santos...

If it is a C string you need, 5-string mandos are more useful than mandola, with easy reaches and richer chords. Mandola scale length is much longer than a viola, and I consider them only marginally...
Another preview of upcoming video concert, my jazz blues., "Blue Iz Mir".

Fine writeup. I attended the Centrum choro week, a real thrill. Jovino was there and I now play a tune we heard the faculty perform, his "Pontapé".
For a guy from the East Coast, Port Townsend...
Here is an example of how I find electric mandolin useful, as a jazz instrument. 10-string electric in a bass/drums trio. This is a preview of a video concert that will post Sunday, May 1. Set was...
Audio-taper pots will tend to have a slight effect as you roll off, then a big effect at the end. Volume is opposite, with audio-taper working as expected. I'm used to tone pots acting this way, from...
My Buchanan had no trouble with 15% humidity in SoCal or 95% on the East Coast beach. Only change is it goes sharp when humid, from expansion, and flat when dry.
Then again, it is not an arch top.
Emando.com is a good source for string sets.
Bronze does not "shield" the strings, it is just not responsive.
Some relationship of short-scale seems to make the lower strings a bit strong for...
I've used them on electric. A colder tone than nickel, I doubt you would like them.
If cost is an issue, buy in bulk (I use JustStrings). I get a dozen wound phosphor bronze .048 for about $9....
I use the 351 shape from Dunlop in Ultex 1.0 mm. That is roughly the same as a Fender heavy but a stiffer material. Powerful and lasts a long time, for cheap.
Did one of those two luthiers make the 10-string Hamilton de Holanda used on the Jacob tribute "Jacob Bossa"? That is a great instrument, much richer and sweeter than his regular one (Ribeiro?).
I find many speakers too bright, and specially small guitar speakers, by which I mean the cone, not the amp. The Roland Cube 40 would be better, although still a bit on the bright , tinny side.
