  3. Re: Identifying bowlback mandolin and question about black inside

While it may be apples and bananas, Whiskey barrels are not cylindrical. There are 13,000,000 in Kentucky alone almost all less than 10 years old.

Staves are curved and tapered from the middle in...
  4. Re: Identifying bowlback mandolin and question about black inside

I certainly agree that bowlbacks show a very high degree of skill on the luthiers part, but ‘mortal woodworkers’ have been building watertight barrels for centuries before bowlbacks appeared. And...

Re: Going from mandolin to mandola, tunes

I learned mandolin chords and inversions based on where the root note lies in the chord, G string, D string, A string or E string. Or you can think root in the bas, third in the bass, fifth in the...

Re: Tygh Valley Oregon Bluegrass Jamboree

Now that I have better internet service I can sadly say my soup failed, as I forgot to add some valuable spices. Still was eaten up. Rumors that I was caught ballot stuffing in the contest are fake...

    Re: Hybrid X Lattice

I would think fitting and installing the lattice as one piece would be a much more difficult process than installing individual pieces. Of course you could install all of the pieces of one side and...

By that criteria people are going to be calling me ‘Kenny’.:)
  12. Re: Good Tone - How long does it actually take?

Re: Tygh Valley Oregon Bluegrass Jamboree

My wife and I will be there. We’re still rehearsing our ‘sing for your supper’ tune and looking forward to a Molly B’s breakfast. Mmmmm, bacon.

I’ll also be defending my Golden Ladle trophy in...
  15. Re: The Dilemma of Motivation, Attention Span, and Practice Regim

Folks may knock it, but scheduling a daily time for a broadly structured practice regimen is quite effective. Following Evan Marshall’s outline, divide your time in blocks of:
    Warmup 10%
    Technical...
  16. Re: Good Tone - How long does it actually take?

As is often said, it depends. And your question seems more like 'how long until I'm the musician I want to be?'

You're the judge of your practice, so comparing how you play your scales versus...

Re: Can anybody tell me what I have?

I'd like to see a picture of it being played. I can't imagine how one can hold it.

Re: Guitar Chord Photo Flash Cards

While learning the shapes can be useful, longer term, knowing the sounds associated with the guitar chords is more powerful, to me anyway. Especially focusing on the root chords, the open G chord,...
