Re: Cherokee Shuffle - Emory Lester

Emory used to teach at the BC Bluegrass Workshops, back in the day when Chris & Sally Jones were also there. One of the finest sets of music I ever saw there featured (THE) Frankie Rogers on fiddle,...

    Re: What's the real difference?

This question can apply to any product: a hardware store bicycle and a Tour de France ride, a bottom dollar car and a Ferrari, timex/rolex, fast food or five star.... We could add builder experience...
  4. Re: Sparse mando and guitar examples aka taste lessons

Well... not always mando & guitar, but one of my alltime favourites is "Lonesome Song" by the Foghorn Duo, Sammy Lind & Caleb Klauder. A great CD project
  5. Re: i think this would be such a cool tune to play on mandolin

Yes indeed Sammy Lind & Caleb K......I can hear it now. BTW Cochon de Lait ....is suckling pig...
  6. Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?

It would be remiss not to mention "Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza" Ronnie McCoury, Sam Bush, Buck White, Bobby Osborne, Jessie McReynolds, Ricky Skaggs, Frank Wakefield & Del McCoury.
    & the...
  7. Re: High End Left Handed Mandolin Sightings?

Here's another. Tom Ellis made this one for me. The first Ellis with a double-flowerpot. A great sounding mandolin. BTW I was the owner of your Heiden F....but developed a penchant for '30s Martin...
  8. Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?

Lately..... Darol Anger's "E-and-a"..... Joe Walsh' mandolin playing is sublime....lots of space. The melody is always present but leaving spaces reminds me of Clarence White's syncopation. Darol...

    Re: Best brand for upgrade

I failed to mention..... buying in person is always preferable & I say that as an Elderly customer north of the 49th. They get some nice vintage Martins from time to time....

    Re: Best brand for upgrade

Tim, I'd stick with Elderly over GC. Any upgraded mandolin you buy needs a set-up. You won't get that from GC, where it might be included or negotiable from Elderly.

Re: Weber Black Ice F info

Greerm, Bruce sold Weber Mandolins in 2012, so the mandolin would have been built in Logan, though it's highly unlikely that Bruce was working at the bench at that time. I've seen Black Ice mandolins...

    Re: Strap Recommendation for A-style

Alan Gelman makes great straps.... & it's cool to buy a strap from someone who is a mandolin player!....& a good guy too.
  13. Re: Replacing a Collings tailpiece with a James tailpiece

Ray T.... People sometimes have difficulty stringing slot-head guitars. If you know how to do it, you can re-restring the Allen tailpieces used on Collings mandolins without aids. It's a matter of...
  14. Re: Replacing a Collings tailpiece with a James tailpiece

Christine, an easy no cost fix is to use a capo somewhere on the mando neck to maintain a bit of tension on the string while you're winding the string around the tuner post at the peghead. I've also...

Re: Dylan on bluegrass in the New York Times

Bob Dylan heard plenty of Bluegrass back in the day. At the 1963 Newport Festival also on the bill were Jim & Jesse, Bill Monroe, & Doc Watson. Here's a clip of Bob D playing with Earl Scruggs....
  17. Re: No mandolin content: Question about finish on Martin Guitar

MBart, as rcc56 said, you're removing finish. The satin finish on the necks is thinner than gloss finish to begin with, & I suspect much of your neck finish has been removed.

Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

U, while i agree that in general prices have gone up, there are a few details that don't line up.Ten years ago a Collings MF5 (lacquer) cost $7200. In 2011 an Ellis A was $5800, and a Heiden A was...

    Re: James tailpiece question

Dillon, I had a tailpiece engraved by Weldon Lister. I bought an unplated one from Bill James, and when the engraved tailpiece was done, I sold the one that was on the mandolin. ( axinc.net )

Re: Small diameter round braided strap source

Not withstanding the Lakota Leathers business model, they're still rougher, bigger & bulkier than the kangaroo hide straps we prefer.
