Re: Best inexpensive F style mando

I had "scroll" envy a few months ago, and sold my great sounding "A" model Loar LM-400VS and purchased a Loar LM-520VS. While a decent sounding, least expensive "F" model, I still missed the sound of...

Re: J. Bovier Mandolins, others thoughts.

Not to be overlooked is the top of the line "A" model Loar LM-400 which has the same lack of top bracing as the 700 Loar has and is made right along with the 600 & 700 by the same builders.
    And the...

    Re: Who's got a "keeper"?

Traded even up my Loar 520 for a Loar LM-400VS, one like I used to own but sold and have missed it ever since. Thing is, this 400 sounds better than my first none did. Couldn't be more pleased!!...
  6. Re: Bluegrass First Class festival in Asheville February 15-17

There is a lot of street/sidewalk "busking" that goes on in Asheville, one of the few US cities to actually encourage it. Some pretty good players play on weekends there, although many are easy to...
  7. Re: FYI: I swapped mandolins returning to my "roots"...

Ha Dave!! Good one!!! I know what you mean however, as I also loved my M-1 Mid-Missouri I traded your LM-400VS for. They are times when only an oval hole will do!! For the rest of the time...there's...
  8. Re: Rosa Lee Watson, Doc Watson's widow has passed

So sorry to hear this, although this seems to happen so often...the spouse passing on shortly after the first one passed.

May the family somehow be comforted by God's peace and fond memories of...
  9. FYI: I swapped mandolins returning to my "roots"...

I want to share with you some of the joy from the latest happenings in my personal mandolin world with the hope that it will at least perhaps bring a knowing smile to your face and lighten up your...

    Re: Student Looking for Mandolin!

Make sure that the Flatiron is not one of the Asian-made ones that still carry the Flatiron name. They should be about 1/2, or at the most 2/3 of a grand at the most.

    Re: New Loar 520

I have a 520 I got off of CL a few months ago. Made in November 2011, the QC seems better than some of the earlier ones made. If you haven't had it done already, I would make sure that it has a...

    Re: Loar Have Mercy

That looks so much better now! My 520 was made in November 2011, and seems to have had a little better QC than the earlier ones did. Mine was almost mint, and the finish was well done with no...

Re: Kentucky km 505 vs. Tacoma m2

The few Tacoma mandolins I have played had a very different voice than a regular mandolin. Seemed more "guitar-like" in tone. One thing as well, is that the neck width's are pretty wide when compared...
  14. Re: First Mandolin. The Loar LM-300 vs. Kentucky KM 350

Unless the specs have changed recently, the Loar LM-400VS has a bound rosewood fingerboard and ebony bridge/saddle. The LM-500, 600, and 700 have an ebony fretboard, but every price-point below that,...
  15. Re: First Mandolin. The Loar LM-300 vs. Kentucky KM 350

The necks on the Kentucky are a thinner profile whereas the Loar has thicker, meatier one.

    Re: Loar Vs. Kentucky

If it is more of a "life-time keeper" mandolin, I'd go with the Kentucky 1000 for sure. Then, you won't be wondering later on "what if..." and wish you had gone that route in the beginning.'

    Re: Mandolin Arm Rests

The armrest I have was made by Doug Edwards (McClung) and fits part way over the tailpiece. It also has an upward slant built into it to accommodate the natural upwards angle of your forearm as it...

Re: Bone saddle or solid ebony bridge?

I would suspect that a bone saddle would be brighter sounding than an ebony saddle would be. Could be wrong though. Kind of depends on what sound you are looking for.

    Re: Loar Vs. Kentucky

The Kentucky KM-1000 has an Adirondack Spruce top, and perhaps the KM-900 does as well, or did at some point. None of the Loar mandolins have the "Addie" top. That doesn't mean the 600 is not a great...
  20. Re: Traded up my Kentucky KM 160 for a Loar LM 520 :)

The 520 is the best price for a "F" model out there for tone and features. I also keep a Tone Guard on mine all the time, which helps in volume and tone. I have a McClung over-the-tailpiece armrest...

  23. Re: How to get a more bluegrassy tone out of my Eastman MD505?

The only other pick I would recommend that you might want to try, if you are still interested in experimenting, is the Wegen 1.4 triangular pick. Between this pick and my BC TAD401R, I am happy with...
