Interesting for sure and a trip back to the 70s and 80s -- a time warp. But there is another long narrative story about R.L. Givens that exists too. It used to be on line in the early days of the...

Luthiers that held the Ms. Griffith Loar in their hands said the same thing, that the back had never been off.

Thanks for posting the interview! It brought me back to Memory Lane.

I bought my first mandolin in Missoula, MT, when I was studying at the U of M. It was a $60 beater. Two years later after...

    Re: Martin vs D'Addario Strings

In the '70s during the pro-playing years of my life I was changing strings every week & "tried em all" (that is the ones that existed back then). I settled on DAddarios as they were the only one's...

Sticky: Re: Loar Picture of the Day

I know this is a Loar thread but I don't want to overlook the early Fern F-5's as I believe many of the first ones have Loar F-5 attributes! Such as left over parts, be it the Fern peg head inlays,...
  9. Re: L&H Model A vrs Gibson Construction differences

    Hi Peter -
Thank you so much! I most appreciate your in depth understanding of these L&H mandolins (and am quite taken with mine - they are really wonderful IMHO). I suspect I could count on one...
  10. Re: L&H Model A vrs Gibson Construction differences

Yes they are quite different. The overall build is lighter than the Gibson's so the top and back are carved thinner, but the bracing is the same with a cross brace behind the sound hole. The top...
  11. L&H Model A vrs Gibson Construction differences

My understanding is that Lyon & Healy Models A, B, and C were constructed differently than Gibsonís of the same era. I am interested in knowing what those differences are. Does it refer to bracing?...

I recommend no. It's original to the mandolin. Removal was tried on an unsigned currently for sale. End result is "finish has been messed with"

Charlie Derrington would call this "slip-matched", if I'm not mistaken. The matter actually appears somewhere earlier in this thread.
