Here she is. Lovely job by Matt Ryan, Manchester UK. Replaced the first seven and dressed the rest to match.

Re: 3/4 of an octave mandolin

I had a "big Mandolin" made some years ago, with an 18 inch scale length. A luthier friend had made some guitars for his kids and made me one with 8 strings. I recently tuned it from CGDA to DAEB and...

Re: Gibson A50 reftret -any advice ?

Well, my Luthier looked down the fretboard and said that the first 12 had been replaced before and he'd do exactly that again.

I passed on rcc56's advice about avoiding the neck joint and not...

Re: Gibson A50 reftret -any advice ?

Good advice, thanks. It has the original bone nut so I'll get him to refit it. I should have thought if this eight weeks ago, all his work dried up but it's busy again now.

Re: Gibson A50 reftret -any advice ?

    Okay,

I think I'll go with a refret on the first 12 for playability, and leave the rest as they are so as not to disturb the old Lady more than necessary. Thanks !

Gibson A50 reftret -any advice ?

My lovely 1935 A50 is still on it's original tiny frets & the first 7 are just about finished.

So, do I have a partial refret with the closest gauge wire I can get, or have a full refret in a...

Re: 18" scale length-Help with options

Around 20 years ago a friend of mine made a small Guitar for each of his twin boys with an 18 inch scale. I liked the look of it so I asked him to make me one with 8 strings.

    It never got...

Re: Marketing and getting your name/brand out.

When I got interested in acoustic guitars, I started collecting them and soon I had about 25. Anyway, time passed and I was only playing three of them so I sold the rest which took a year or so. My...

Re: Why So Few Resonator Mandolins?

i’ve recently bought a Beltona. Haven’t played it at a Session yet as it’s gone back to Steve Evans for a slight adjustment. I previously had an RM1 which was really too loud & made me self...

    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

It sounds really good to me especially for the classical-type piece you played. My old friend Martin Jenkins played a Mandocello which he christened the "Swine o phone" probably because it was a...

    Re: Blues Mandolin Song Choices

I stick in G when I'm doing songs if possible, easy chords which sound good & the possibility of a solo.

I like "Can't be satisfied" (Muddy Waters)"Monday morning blues" ( MIssissippi John Hurt)...

    Re: Resonator mandolin repair

I imagine the end block has come adrift and the string tension has broken the bodywork. I think this is an easy repair, when you take all the metalwork off you'll see what's going on.

We don't have many Gibson Mandolins in the UK. Every now and again a bunch of bogus listings appear on Ebay & I keep reporting them until they get removed. I suspect this listing is from someone who...

    Re: Three Beginner Questions

The mistake I made was to turn the Mandolin too far towards my ears to hear...

  24. Re: oddball (pseudo?-) resonator w. amusing "professional" setup

I take your point, but you could also say that Dobro also didn't build Dobros, Regal did that too at least for some of the time. I imagine Slingerland made the metal parts, they certainly sold lots...
  25. Re: oddball (pseudo?-) resonator w. amusing "professional" setup

Cathedranola was a Slingerland name, here's the matching Guitar. Slingerland made high quality drums out of a factory in Chicago & went into Banjos & resonator instruments. Gibson own the name now....
