  1. Re: Question for members who have attended workshops/symposiums

I've never been to one either but Mandolin Camp North looks really good. I might hit that one up.

Re: Advice for a new pick

I'll have to give one of these a try, they look interesting. I usually use a Wegen or Bluechip.

    Re: Acute MAS: Gil fever

I also not wanting to be a mediocre player with a high end mandolin have had the same thoughts with the OP. Would feel like a jerk at a jam with my custom mandolin and my playing skills. I passed up...

    Re: Chop turns Sock

Rhythm can get neglected when all your time is spent playing at home, my Boston Terriers never want to take a lead break. It is something that attracted me to mandolin, a cool rhythm or back up...

    Re: Chop turns Sock

I just kind of naturally fell in to doing it for some reason, guess I'm glad it's in the toolbox. So far easily fixed with kind of ghost strike on the one and three.

    Re: Chop turns Sock

Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep it to a solid 2-4 chop.

    Chop turns Sock

Bluegrass rhythm- I'll sometimes tap the pick on the G string on the first and third beats. So you get tap-chop-tap-chop. On faster songs if I speed that up the tap seems to turn to hearing the lower...

    Re: Will Kimble "Trident" Mandolin

Love the two point mandolins. That's really nice!
  13. Re: Looking at your hands while playing -- opinions?

I'm usually staring at a book looking at tab or notation the first twenty times I work on a new song or exercise and that does it for me too. I can look wherever after that but I also find I look at...
  14. Poll: Re: Poll for Song a Week Social Group Week # 305

I'm stupid late but here is Bluegrass Special, these guys kind of jam it out a bit. The Monroe recording isn't that great.

Re: Can you play a real song?! Ugh!

A little comment like that can sting when you're putting yourself out there to play something. I think the bottom line is as long as the mandolin is bringing enjoyment to your life and you are...
  16. Re: Pre-war Gibson A style mandos: what's the scoop?

I had my hands on a couple of these yesterday, a 20's oval hole A-2 and I guess the other one was an A-3. Pretty nice, they seem to have been in there awhile but there aren't many mandolin players...

    Re: Self Teaching

Yeah that's what makes this place so great! Most people I know think a mandolin is something you cut vegetables with, if that.

    Re: Self Teaching

That's for sure! For me it was back up and put the instrument away for ten years. I could have had twelve years under my belt by now.

    Re: Self Teaching

I know you get to that point and kind of teach yourself anyway, like you're saying. With all the resources today there certainly should be a higher success rate even for a beginner. If you have a...

    Self Teaching

Self teaching, yeah I think it can be done. It just so happens I'm not a very good teacher. The first time around (trying) was before the plethora of resources we have now and that didn't go so well....
  21. Re: dings in finish on new instrument - should I say something?

I would say something. Just like if I had a new car or whatever with the same issue. It's bad enough if I put a new ding on my new mandolin, I wouldn't be happy finding it came pre-dinged.

    Re: Michael Kelly?

Not very high on the list of recommended. You could add Kentucky to your list and I think your going to find more people will suggest one of those instead of a MK.
  23. Re: Found a good Bill Monroe Song/Tune book.

Yeah, I hate that. Hard to tell sometimes if it's going to be a helpful book or another a waste.

Tab and notation. The cd plays all the songs/tunes and examples at a slow speed. Arpeggios and...
  24. Found a good Bill Monroe Song/Tune book.

I'm not sure how long it's been out but I recently found a good Bill Monroe book of tunes and songs "Play Like A Legend, Bill Monroe Tunes & Songs For Mandolin." It's by Joe Carr. Lots of great...
