On Thursday night, I'll be doing another Facebook Live show, singing and playing some acoustic blues on mandolin and banjos. This will be the sixth show in a series that I've done since isolation.

Re: What are you playing the blues on?

I use an Eastman MD515, but I make no claims to any kind of authenticity in my sound. It's just the mandolin that I have and love.

    Thanks, Joey!
  5. Re: Another acoustic blues show on facebook live

If anyone wants to see the video from my show last night, here's the link. There were five songs on mandolin, four songs on Irish tenor banjo, two songs on five-string banjo. Spoiler: I played some...

  7. Re: Acoustic blues show on mandolin and banjos

Thanks for the endorsement, Ranald. That show at The Log Drive is probably my favourite show I've ever played: Great audience, great room, and a very supportive environment!

    Here's a link to the...

    Re: Buzzing at/near the bridge

Hmm. Not sure what I was expecting, but all of that stuff sounds above my pay grade. I think I may need to pay the nice man to take care of it for me.

    Thanks, pops!

    Buzzing at/near the bridge

I have an Eastman MD-515 that has been reliable and lovely for the eight years I've had it; I've never had a problem with it. About once every year or so, I have it professionally set up at my local...

    Re: Songs for a wedding

You’re right: It’s just for the ceremony, and just instrumental. I’m not shy about singing, but my voice isn’t appropriate for this type of thing. I’m just making a few suggestions to the couple, and...

    Re: Songs for a wedding

Perhaps I should have mentioned that this is my girlfriend's nephew, and she was the one to tell me "No songs about death or heartbreak".

    And I really like her.

    Re: Songs for a wedding

Thanks, y’all. I’ll check this stuff out. I forgot to mention that the wedding is in a month; doubt I’ll be learning any Tarantella in that time!

    Songs for a wedding

I've been asked to play at a wedding ceremony. I've started learning the Bridal March, but need to play while the signing is happening as well. I may get some input from the bride and groom. If I do,...

Improvising is 50% theory and 95% ear, and pretty much equal in importance.

    Re: Picks

I only thought there was one kind of Golden Gate. Hadn't come across those others in my investigations. I think I have my new weapon of choice now, but thanks for chiming in!

    Re: Picks

And Jim Broyles is the winner! The Ultex 1.14 rounded triangle is the beast for me. Nice punchy sound: Those strings know they’ve been picked, and picked hard.

    Thanks, y’all.

    Re: Picks

Jim, I've been using the Stiffo ones. They sound fantastic, and a little bit mean.

dadsaster, I'll try the Jazztone. At this point, why not add a few more picks to my library, eh?

Thanks so much, guys. Of course, I was hoping for a consensus of "Yep, you definitely need THIS pick", but you've given me some more to investigate. :-)

    Picks

Iíve used the golden gate for years, but decided I wanted a sharper attack. I bought a pile of different picks, including a Blue Chip (didnít love it). The Dunlop Jazz III is the one I like best,...
