    Re: Double Standard

Sorry of that came out harsh. The builders forum was the right place to put it.

However the responses will depend on how the posting is presented. If it is asked as a question such as: "Why is...

    Re: Double Standard

You are absolutely wrong. In a technical forum and a technical discussion amplify means to add energy, whether electrical, mechanical or other. It is not limited to electronic amplifiers. There...

    Re: Double Standard

I think the reason for the double standard is this. With the "What strap do I use, what pick do I use ,who is your favorite player type of questions the person is seeking information. They are...

Re: A chord without muting A string

When playing the mandolin it helps sometimes to approach the strings with the left hand fingers along the length of the fretboard like a fiddle player does rather than trying to bring the tips...

Re: New Big Muddy - Myrtlewood!?

I have a Breedlove Northwest Classic with Myrtlewood back and sides. The back has absolutely spectacular figure. I did not look at the back till I got it home and found a nice surprise. I had...

    Re: Central Illinois

If you need a teacher Andy Hatfield is in Peoria. He is as good a teacher as anyone anywhere and a national champion mandolin and guitar player.

    Re: Wood identity question

A burl is a growth on a tree which is a response to injury or a fungus infection. They can be from a lot of different species but are more common in walnuts and redwoods. Maple can have burls as...
  8. Sierra Hull playing as half the audience walks away.

    Re: If you jam . . . .

You are correct when you say you should not abandon them altogether. Perhaps you are not quite ready yet. When they come to you, all of a sudden one day you will say to yourself gee that is not all...
  10. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

There is famous correspondence between Winston Churchill and Winston Churchill about the possibility of confusion between their names. They reached an amicable agreement about how to address the...
  11. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

No, you are simply wrong. Using a particular material for a new, previously untried, application is a legitimate reason for a patent even if you do not make the material. I have been involved in...

    Re: If you jam . . . .

Just be sure there are not other issues. An instructor friend of mine says that "No one has the right to kick you out of a jam but you do not have the right to ruin other people's jams."

    As an...

Pops, did you ever play on the Julia Belle Swain when it was running out of LaCrosse? I always wanted to ride on it but then they stopped running around 2009. Here is a picture I took of it up...

Re: Convert Grover 309N Tuners to Worm Under?

Just to be clear. The worms are cut either right or left handed. Flipping them over does not change the spiral on the worm. It is just like screw threads. Turning them end for end does not make...

The Music Lesson by Victor Wooten is entirely based on the idea of learning musicality instead of how to play a musical instrument. In it the teacher Michael says that he cannot teach the...

No it is not wrong. The tailpiece should not be in contact with the top. A mandolin works like an archtop guitar not a flattop with it's glued down bridge.

One approach that might have a better return on both time and financial investment might be to make mockup bridge bottom blanks of maple scrap or something similar rather than ebony. They could be...

I don't know if Jimi ever played a mandolin. It would have been interesting. In Little Feat
Fred Tackett is quite a good mandolin player. He just didn't use it in the video. He plays everything...
