    Re: What’s after a Kentucky KM-1050?

I’ve owned a Weber Yellowstone mandocello and presently own a Weber bitterroot OM. Both are spectacularly made instruments with outstanding tone and impeccable fit and finish, and both were built...

    Re: What’s after a Kentucky KM-1050?

Lol, in re-reading that, it sounds harsh, which wasn’t my intention! But, I stand behind it, as I’ve been there. My main mandolin prior to the Kelley was a Silverangel Econo model from 2009. After a...

    Re: What’s after a Kentucky KM-1050?

Skip Kelley and Steve Sorensen are two builders I’d check out. I have a Kelley A5 that’s a spectacular instrument. Mandomutt sells them on consignment and often has links to videos of Skip playing...

    Re: Why Mandolin?

Nickel Creek’s “Ode to a Butterfly.” A DJ for one of the country stations in Charleston, SC, played it in the background as he kicked off the morning show every day. Someone finally called in to ask...

  8. Re: Do you think a Morris flat top would fit in this case?

I’ve had good luck with Gator cases through the years. They’re relatively inexpensive but hold up well. Calton quality? Of course not, but for everyday use and for car travel, playing at church, etc,...
  9. Re: Do you think a Morris flat top would fit in this case?

Suspect you’d be OK. I carried my Flatiron 1N in a regular A5 sized TKL for years without issue. When traveling I would pad the body and head stock with T-shirts just to minimize movement.

    My...

Re: Narrowed it down to three

Congratulations on an excellent choice! Glad you were able to play a few and pick what felt/sounded the best...definitely the way to go!

    Re: El Toro ?

Go for the El Toro if you can afford it. Ken’s building some awesome instruments, and has for years. My Silverangel Econo held its own against mandolins costing much more, and sounded better than any...

    Re: Holding the pick

Assuming that your teacher changed you to a Mike Compton power grip or a Chris Thile style grip (both pretty similar, actually), then I’d stick with the new grip. It is like starting over, but will...

    Re: Eastman Mandolin Advice

Tom, agree totally, as evidenced by this week’s Mandolin Monday, played on a Eastman, and, some of Mandolin Orange’s earlier recordings as well...
  15. Re: A tune I wrote for octave mandolin - Something Squirrelly

Very nicely done! Thank you for the tab as well. I’m at the beach this week with only a uke and a tele given the heat/humidity/travel, but am looking forward to having a go at it when I get home this...

    Re: Which Budget Fingerstyle Guitar?

Agree that you can absolutely FP a D-28, but also believe that a little wider nut width/string spacing helps. Consider also some lower numbered Taylor’s and Seagull guitars. My local shop carries...

Re: Givens Saddle - custom size?

Well, Dale has probably done several thousand bridge fittings through the years, so, yeah, no big deal to Dale, but for us mere mortals, a bigger deal than it should be, lol. Around my house, if a...

    Re: Pick depth

I try to play just shallowly enough to not hit the scooped extension on my Rigel. I suspect that translates to my Kelly A5 as well, as I play them both regularly, but as long as there’s no annoying...

Re: Narrowed it down to three

Another vote for the Kentucky. Loar used to make some very nice instruments, but changed their business model a few years back, and their newer offerings are less consistently good than Eastman and...

One of my favorite “stuck in the airport videos” was of this song. The whole concourse was singing it. The reason there are so many videos is because it’s a fun, accessible song!
