Grovers are super nice. I have both Grovers (on a Rigel) and Waverlys and the latter aren't that much better in terms of feel and tuning stability.
I suggest asking in the amp forum on TGP - thegearpage.net - where a lot of electric players hang out.
I bought a used instrument - apparently with a carbon fiber stiffener - but with no adjustable truss rod. The neck & intonation were off requiring the frets pulled and the board replaned. The...
I think the Ebony Hillbillies is a great band name!
I had a similar experience - OM just not working for that as well as guitar - and just ended up teaching myself guitar (which I learned initially as a superset of mandolin strung backwards :) ).
...
I love the "DeArmonds" too!
Unbelievable as in pitiful (yes, I agree) or as in, "that's not so"? That's not to say it's not a well-made, protective and attractive case - it very much is.
But, the older Calton - I have one...
That would depend on your package of strings. Definitely not the standard square pack of J74s though.
I actually had an Adamas (a 12-string Melissa Etheridge to be precise) and it was an excellent 12 string. Super nice neck, very tuning stable, and 12 strings were enough to drive it to sound good...
J74s work just fine on mine...
I'm listening to it now and it's very good!
I bought a new Calton (Austin) as the home for my Ellis A5 Special. Fit and finish are very nice and the hardware if anything is nicer than my older Canadian Calton in which my Rigel G110 lives...
My newish Ellis A5 is also a slightly tight fit in a TKL Collings. Also in a newer, non-custom, F5 Calton.
It's apparently a mandola: http://jerseygirlhg.com/composition/branches/resandy/
I just bought a new one a few weeks ago from my local store (Dusty Strings) who had a large stock. Very nice leather!
My older Rigel with Grovers is at least that stable, once the strings have been broken in of course.
For a short (yet too long a time), I had a mandola that needed its crudely installed metal strap button - quite possibly from a bass - replaced.
I found a super nice one Made in USA from ebony...
It would be interesting to hear/play a Gilchrist retopped MSO (mandolin shaped object). But probably not the best use of his time.
Just bought a new (Sonic Blue, very cool) Calton for an equally new (and very cool) Ellis A5 Special.
I have an older Calton so I can see the many improvements, but the compartment under the neck...
I see the issue - Amazon Canada still shows "not yet released" while Amazon US shows "in stock".
I had the triple instrument version (GS432B) and thought it was great for a while.
It was in my closet for a year or so due to a move. When I pulled it out, the rubber foam had turned into a...
I learned to play the guitar thinking of it as a very large mandolin with the top four strings in reverse order. :)
I get a message that his domain name expired.
I agree with Tone Poems, noting that it also makes some pretty marginal mandolins sound great too.
