  1. Re: Should I put a Mandolin Cafe Sticker on my Vintage Lifton Cas

I do not put stickers on vintage cases. While I have several vintage instrument and I don't particularly baby them in terms of play and travel, I do try to avoid alterations that are not clearly in...

    Re: Brekke vs Traditional Bridge

I bought a 1999 Big Sky new. It was then, and to this day is about the best Weber I every played. It's outlasted a few other more expensive mandolin, and it's still my #1. As good as it was with...

I hear that a lot, but it seems most people experiencing that are taking packages to the stores to ship, paying for packing services, or paying for high declared value. Oversized boxes increase cost...

    Re: Ups insurance a ripoff

Not quite..... In that example the driver was paid $400 for his time. Without a doubt the total cost of transporting the organ was many multiples of that.

Certainly there are examples of bad handling caught on security cameras and posted on YouTube, but I'm not at all sure that's the norm. A musical instrument is relatively delicate compared to the...

A few random thoughts, none of which help the OP now.....

UPS does not sell insurance. They will allow you to pay more for "declared value", but the terms of service clearly spell out that it is...

Guess I should come out from under the rock more often. I read the thread title and thought it was a new mandolin builder. Really. :(

Re: CF Martin Mandolin Serial Number 2604

I asked a Martin historian to take a look at the serial number. Here's what he sent me.

This mandolins is a little more interesting that it appears. This is an example of a prototype 000...

    "Is this how it starts?"

Perhaps I missed it, but I didn't see a succinct answer to the original question. The answer is, "Yes!" :-)

Congrats! The Strad-O-Lin is especially cool.

Re: Instruments on a Road Trip

As far as damage goes, heat is your main enemy. It can get very hot, about 150 degrees or more inside a car sitting in the sun. That's hot enough to cause glue failure and catastrophic structural...

    Re: Collings Tailpiece Strap-button Removal

Collings glues end pins on their guitars too, but to their credit they fit them to the collar. Not all manufacturers get that detail right. They simply don't want the end pins coming loose. They...

If I live a good life, maybe I will never hear anything like that ever again. They're free to do it of course. I have no problem with that, but it's not for me.

  17. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

This is a trademark claim, not a patent dispute. I think the reason this tends to irritate people is that Gibson didn't claim this and similar trademarks for decades, then after they become more or...

Re: diminished value from a repair?

A broken scroll on an F-Style mandolin is not what we'd normally think of as a "headstock crack" or "broken headstock". It's strictly cosmetic in the sense that it can be broken off entirely and the...

Re: diminished value from a repair?

Ed's correct. We'd need to know more to assess any particular instrument. In general, a clean break that's well repaired will reduce the value by about 30% compared to market price of the same...

Re: Should Bryan Kimsey scallop my guitar?

    Just short of ruined how?

Bryan won't scallop the lighter bracing of a D-35, and I'm certain he didn't ADD a bridge plate on top of a bridge plate and then install a Bridge Doctor. :-)
