  1. Re: L/F recommendation: mandolin set-up & repair in So. Calif.

Bit of a hike, but Carruthers Guitars does work for many pros. Shop’s in Camerillo.

    Re: On Line Lessons

Mike Marshall at Artistworks has a fantastic beginner curriculum, if you’re looking for that. I’ve taken years of lessons from him. I also take from Peghead Nation, whose instructors and classes are...

    Re: RIP Jerry Jeff Walker

Blind Willie Johnson should also be on the list. Played in Deep Ellum too. Must make a pilgrimage to Ellum one day.
  4. Re: Three Early Kentucky Mandolins Made In Japan

Did you try calling Saga in South San Francisco? They’ve researched serial numbers for me. Good folk.

    Re: Right hand wrist position

It’s up to you, of course, but I’d take a look at some youtube vids on the subject. Mike Marshall and others recommend resting your thumb pad on or just below the top of the bridge, not enough to...

  9. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

Burns picked a perfect place to stop, though I was itching for him to take on Newgrass. He could have at least given us a taste! But most all of that newer stuff is available on youtube and...

Thanks to all you historians, filling in some of the blanks in my upbringing.
  11. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

Awesome thread about an awesome doc. Even my wife, who’s not that into country and especially not intoC and W, and who has little background in the bluegrass I play rather incessantly, is captivated.

    Re: Elbow or wrist...

No. In general, I advocate doing what most players do, a little more elbow when playing chords, more wrist when picking. Check out David Benedict’s website or watch him on utoob. I just thought it...

    Re: Tonegards

Interesting thread. My $.02: I’ve had one for several years on my KM 1500, a newer Tonegard with the clear tubing on the clamps. I play sitting down usually. with only the very back of the mando...

    Re: Elbow or wrist...

David B. is clearly resting his mando on something...first time I’ve seen that. Must try it myself. I think that seems to stabilize his mando and promotes more of the elbow, tomahawk action....

    Re: Soft Picks ?

I’ve tried most all the picks, and I’ve found the D’Andrea Radex 1.25 I got recently to be really soft, almost a sponge-like feel. Softest I’ve tried, but I haven’t tried a Wolle.
