Oooh... I am interested!
Tell me more?
Thanks, Dave.
I already have a Protuguese guitar (Coimbra).
Got my heart set on a real waldzither. :)
Hi,
This seemes like the place for alternative-mando instruments, so . . . :)
I've been looking for a while to acquire a waldzither in playable condition, but have not been having much luck.
...
Is this actually a bass mandolin?
...
Well, Nyberg turned me down pretty quick:
"Only if it's for a Nyberg." was the whole of their reply.
Thanks, I am contacting him also.
Thanks, I just sent them an email.
I don't actually care if it's exactly like those pictured -- I just haven't been able
to find -any- cittern tailpieces. Everything I've seen is for 4, 6, or 8...
Yeah, I looked at the Allen stuff, but thanks for the reply.
The open hole design seems to be hip for modern citterns. It's hard to believe
that everone is doing their own brass milling, but I...
Sounds like you solved your problem. But since I'm here, I thought I'd add my 2¢. :)
I had an acoustic guitar with a tapered endpin that kept pulling out at inconvenient times,
and I wanted to...
Does anyone here know where one would go to purchase a cittern tailpiece similar to one of these?

I've tried StewMac, All Parts, Guitar Parts Resource, and several...
@Walt
Thanks for the replies.
My MC is actually teardrop shaped. Something like this:

The top of mine is arched, somewhat, though.
Okay, I think I gave Chris Thile's radio show a fair chance. I liked him as a musician and technician, and had been a long time fan of PHC, so I hung in there. I tried to like the show; I really...
I've got a Portuguese mandocello, nice sound, nice feel, but it came with a cheesy stamped tailpiece. I'd like to replace it with something a little more substantial, but so far I haven't turned up...
I've been experimenting with odd guitar tunings for a while now, and I have a standard-scale (about 25.5") classical guitar tuned in all fifths: C2-G2-D3-A3-E4-B4. I couldn't get any stock string...
The page works, but as near as I can make out the only way to leave a message for Dave is in his guestbook. More than half the time I've tried, the post never shows up. I did get two posts to...
Does anyone here know how to contact Dave Hynds, who runs this site:
http://www.mandolinluthier.com/ ?
I've tried leaving messages through his guest book, but they don't always post for some...
Well, I guess APHC is officially dead. Now. :crying:
Heh, I should have know there was a whole group dedicated to cases, somewhere on the internet.
Thanks for the invitation, Steve. If I ever decided to do Facebook, I'll look you guys up.
This is fascinating, Steve -- the only place I've seen this kind of information before. Thanks!
And thanks to everyone who responded. You've all convinced me that making a case is a lot of work....
Now that I think about it, the answer to that depends on what a 'mandolin' is.
Y'know... That's almost the population of Iceland.
Shouldn't we have our own country? :mandosmiley:
There's a census coming up in the US in about 3 years. Contact the Census Bureau, and maybe you can get them to include "mandolin" on their forms, perhaps as an ethnicity. ;)
Question for all the builders out there.
I am old enough to remember when, once upon a time, anyone who sold you an instrument worth more than a couple hundred bucks would include a hardshell case...
Heh. and there are probably some people for whom every instrument is a mandolin. :)
It does kinda open up a can-o-worms, doesn't it?
I've seen that, too, for example in banjo forums where "banjo" is basically defined as "what Earl played".
Until you meet the classic banjo...
