Yep!
I used to use a set of 11-40 strings, but when I went back to playing more guitar I found those to be too heavy to manage during my limited time with my mandolin.
I tried a set of 10's for a bit...
For the curious, I diagnosed this ringing as coming from the strings behind the NUT (thanks @sunburst). Strange that I never noticed this before. I've had this mandolin since 2007. Might be something...
I'm noticing something unusual with my mandolin. After a damped note I hear a metallic ringing or resonance that seems to be coming from the body. It sounds similar to what you hear if you lightly...
I bought my Passernig mandolin there and enjoyed working with the owner. No complaints. It's not a huge store like Carter's or Gruhn's.
I made a short demo of #42 today. I haven't played much mandolin lately so forgive my fat fingers. This one is from 2007 and is sounding really good after a recent fret dressing.
...
I went to a clinic with Bibey and Benson. Bibey had his Loar and Benson has his Fern. What a pleasure to hear those great instruments played by great players in an intimate setting. Bibey's Loar had...
You could do worse than to copy his right hand technique.
I WAS in a band, but I got frustrated with certain aspects of it and posted my complaints here as a way of getting feedback on how to approach my bandmates.
Someone emailed the thread to the...
The place in Red Bank will have the strings you want but the price will be LIST. As in a set of EXP's will be priced at $17 or something like that. I've taken to ordering mine from Elderly. If you...
Worries about resale appeal would probably cause me to not order a mandolin without dots. I know, I know, a lot of people don't worry about resale on a custom mandolin, but so far I've sold every...
I don't like to see shorts worn on stage. No one pays to see an old man's legs.
I've been playing for about 25 years now, and I've only had a few of those moments when everything just seems to come from outer space, and the less I think the better I play. When it hits, I've...
Interesting string spacing at the nut on that one.
You hear a lot about the "Bluegrass Police" but I think the "Old Time Police" routinely put bluegrass traditionalists to shame. As a result, it seems like a LOT of what you hear from an Old Time...
I have a Tapastring jack in mine and chose it for ease of installation, mostly. It came with a 1/8" angled stereo plug that I attached to one end of a guitar cable I had. I can keep my special cable...
Yeah. I think Cindy Pinion keeps the schedule. I don't go often. We live on Signal and it's a long drive to most of the locations.
I thought the program was great. The technical difficulties were a shame, but the quality of the work was very fine. Norman and John Hartford proved to be born storytellers with a natural humor (RIP...
Funny you should ask.
I'm no longer in the band.
Wow. Whatever you think! Good luck with that. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif
It's great to have input on this topic from people with lots of real world experience.
I run the PA for our band, and I'm lucky that we always play the same room using a good system that we own...
Hinted at in another thread, but let's face it head on.
What are the keys to having good timing/groove/drive in a bluegrass band?
What role should each instrument play?
What are common...
As when the Country Gentlemen or Jim & Jesse used to insert drums in their LPs during the seventies? # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif[/QUOTE]
Didn't like it then,...
The mics are DPA's I think. They're pricey. Unless you use in-ear monitors, you will get feedback. All those guys use IEMs.
It's interesting what some makers have done with their pricing....they can get in these conversations because they're asking a lot for their work and some people are willing to pay it. Good on them,...
