As a hobbyist woodturner I love working with silver maple. Perhaps you could contact your local woodturning club???
Jed is the only person I trust my with my instruments. He's also a heck of a mandolin player! I'm looking forward to hearing what type of wire and gauge you guys chose.

On your Holst C5, it looks like the pickguard/finger-rest is attached to the bridge. Is that the case?
