Thank you everyone for the in depth explanations and tips. I'll keep practicing and try not to stress out too much when I work on this. :)
Without beating a dead horse, I have some extra practice time this year. I've been away from the cafe for a while, and it's nice to be back.
To dive right into the question, I have difficulty with...
Welcome! Sounds like you're having a blast. :)
Sorry about the click-bait title with no content. Got distracted. Forgot to even take pictures...
Anyway, I'd like to say that it's exactly like I heard about it hear at the cafe, and am thankful...
In Nashville today. Currently at Carter Vintage Guitars. Stay calm... stay calm...
:D
Yes, it makes enough sound to hear yourself in a quiet room, but it won't be heard in the next room, for example from outside the hotel rooms I spend half my life in. :)
I exaggerated earlier when...
Alternate title: "F-holes? Oval holes? No holes!"
I get it, it's not for everyone, but I needed this if I was ever going to get on a regular practice schedule. :)

That looks crazy.
*sob*
I love this place.
I've never been able to try one, I'd have to go on looks alone. Nobody does that when it comes to mandolins, do they? ;)
On a serious note, it _would_ be nice to see them in the wild sometime.
"Ships from Carlinville, Illinois"
Lol, I used to live there as a kid.
I don't even know how to respond. Wow. It's like they just spent a few hours reading Amazon reviews and became an expert.
Full agreement here. :)
Thank you! :) She's been pretty supportive in the past (the whole "I want to be an airline pilot" thing happened _after_ we were married, lol), but it's taken some ... "discussion" for her to come...
Thank you. I love the Eastman. My ears need some time to get used to the sound. I wasn't expecting it to be _so_ different from my Epiphone. I love that I can fit my finger on a note without touching...
So, my wife learned that there was this pick made of aerospace plastic that I thought was cool. Yesterday she hands me this tiny little present to unwrap, and I about flipped when I saw the Blue Chip...
At what point do you have to worry about serious damage, and how long could that take? I have two cheap electronic hygrometers, not the most accurate things in the world, but it seems that my whole...
How hard is it to replace a banjo bridge? It's doable by the average person but still not trivial on a mandolin. Changing picks is a really easy way to change sounds. :)
Still waiting to be able to take one to work (I need, shall we say, a travel version), but as to ties I am not embarrassed to admit mine has a hidden zipper and a permanent knot.
Makes catching...
I read the forums here much more than I ever post, but this thread is the reason I love being here with all of you. Beginner asks question, not a single person tries to shut them down or tell them to...
Thank you, Mark. You've given me a lot to digest there, maybe more than I expected. I get there are exceptions to the rules, like many people here have said, but I feel like there are some...
I'm still very much a beginner at this stage, about 9 months in to trying to be more serious about practicing and improving on the mandolin. One thing I know I need to work on is pick direction, as...
Well, after much searching (whoever goes past the first page of Google results anyway?) I found someone, Muth Mandolins, advertising exactly what I was looking for. Success!

Well, I made the decision, and not the exciting one. The thought of spending more on a mandolin I wanted less than a Kentucky or Eastman just wasn't going to work in my head for long, so I'm skipping...
Jeff, yeah a lot comes down to not wanting to carry an extra item. I've had to re-figure out just carrying food for trips because a small third bag was becoming a liability when asking for the jump...
