    Re: F style mandolin strap

I have a Washburn F body and the strap shown is exactly what I am using. I did put a couple of new holes in it for the rear peg as some times I like it over the shoulder and sometimes I like it over...

I was once told improvising is 90% feelings and 10% skill. Feel the music and let your mind and fingers go free.

    Re: Santa Clara Mandolin

That is the exact one I saw. It was blonde and really cheaply put together from what I could tell. IT looked like a child had drug it around the neighborhood, literally. Just looking at the tail...

    Re: Santa Clara Mandolin

When I was looking at it I did not see a dove tail joint on the neck and yes it is a Santa Rosa. Brain stuck on Santa Clara for some reason!!!:))

    Santa Clara Mandolin

I ran across a Santa Clara Mandolin this weekend that was in pretty rough shape. Has anyone heard of these? It appears to be cheaply made based on the the tail piece but I am not sure. It is an A...

    Re: Finger Ease

Sherry, It might be the action is set too high off the strings. I recommend you take it to a repair person and have them lower the action for you. I too started out with an old ACER mandolin and it...

    Re: Tremolo on E String

I agree with Mark Wilson on this. I have also found the height of the strap makes a difference as well.Could be your strap is set too low and you are reaching for the E string.( if you are using a...

Re: Looking for Advice for Holding Fingers Down

All of this is great assuming the action on your mandolin is set light. Some mandolins come with an exaduration here-1/4th to 1/2 inch string height at the nut and need to be set lower.

    Re: Improvement By Thinking.

Mark, I believe this is part of learning to play by ear. I do the same thing. I listen to a song and visualize the notes on the fingerboard. Then when I get home, I apply it to the mandolin. I come...

Re: Issue With Re-Learning Right Hand

Butch is using the same technique I began with but found myself getting lazy and resting on the finger rest/pick guard. I then watched Ronnie McCurry play. Since I too only speak Bluegrass on the...

Re: Issue With Re-Learning Right Hand

Right hand technique, I have found, has as many opinions as what is the best pick to use. I too am retraining my right hand technique to free floating as I found myself resting on the bridge and...

    Washburn Mandolins

Just a general question here. I never hear anyone mentioning Washburn mandolins on this forum. Is there a known issue with them? I have a F5 W3 electric acoustic I am learning on and have had to...
  14. Re: Effective picking exercises for speed and accuracy?

I agree with speed being a mind thing. I often find my picking getting ahead of my mind and that is when I make mistakes!!!

Re: Picks Slippingand rotating while playing

That looks a lot like the pick holders I was speaking about. Except they slip over the pick as these look like they are adhered to just the front and back of the pick.

Re: Mandolin Set-up E-Book by Rob Meldrum

    Rob,
I have been using that e-book for the the last 6 months and it is FANTASTIC!!! It puts all the mandolin repairmen(pseudo) here in northern Colorado to shame. I used the recommendations and man...

Re: String popping out of bridge?? Help!

I would return it and expect them to either replace it whole or replace the bridge. If you start messing with cutting out the slot in the bridge, you could end up replacing the bridge and voiding the...

    Re: Playing with 'itis issues

You can change the action by lowering the bridge and then drop the strings at the nut to 0.015" This is where I have mine and a light touch is all it takes at the first fret on all 8 strings. A good...
