  1. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

If Gibson's reasoning was right that these "counterfeit instruments" destroy their market, then why do they join the fray by posing as bad-tempered Scrooges in front of the musicians they want to...

    Re: Noisy finish ???

The steel wool thing did work for me.
I basically followed what the man in this video demonstrates:

Re: Storage: Case vs Hanging on the Wall

If that is so, I am the exception. Unless I am playing or modifying my OM, it's in its case.

    Re: I'm finally "getting it"!

Accepting an instrument for what it really is is essential. It opens up all the options.
The same applies for accepting one's own personality, which is an interesting connection because the ideal...

Re: Do people ever change their strings?

Interesting - in 9 years of violin lessons all those decades ago my violin strings were never changed. Indeed, they were seldom tuned, because I intensely disliked the friction tuners with their...

Re: OM accompaniments a la Andy Irvine

Doing what Andy Irvine does is a two-brain feat not everybody can do. My own approach is fingerpicking.

Re: Man I need a good tuner...

The tuners are fixed with screws already, so I guess you take one of those screws out and this screw in instead. But I will find out.

Re: Man I need a good tuner...

Basically a good idea, but my OM's hole is reinforced with a narrow ring underneath, I have my doubts about fixing a tuner there.

Re: Man I need a good tuner...

that problem is new to me - Irish music is more of a nocturnal thing. I haven't played a session in sunlight in years.

Re: Man I need a good tuner...

Agree, an instrument of measurement should tell the truth, not a strong opinion. In real-world situations as with noise, other instruments playing, resonances within your own instrument etc I'd be...

Re: Man I need a good tuner...

That is the same D'Addario micro I use (just with a shorter clamp for the headstock). I see that one once a month on a fiddle to my right in a session. I suspect that mandolins are deeper than...

Re: Man I need a good tuner...

Sounds familiar to me. The D'Addario micro has a curious habit of indicating a low battery long before you really have to change it, but there comes a time when it shuts down on you in the middle of...

Re: Man I need a good tuner...

Re: Should I Buy an OM

How could I advise anybody against getting an OM? Go get one.
Playing ITM accompaniment is not a trivial task, however. You have to acquire a feeling for harmonies for a tune the moment you hear it....
