Who played mandolin on Larry Sparks- Blue Virginia Blues? I've been really into the playing all over Larry's Classic Bluegrass album, and I'd love to know who handled the mandolin picking.
I was watching John talk about his mandolin in the video at: https://www.fretboardjournal.com/video/john-reischmans-loar-mandolin
I really like the bit of music he's playing at around 4:25. Although...
I believe there's a jam at Bluegrass Musician's Supply on South High Street Saturday. Maybe around noon. Other than that, the two jams I know of are Tuesday and Thursday, so that won't help you.
That tune is 'Big Sciota'

Just put the modified armrest back on, it works great!

I decided to go with Soliver's idea. I made a small plate and just glued it to the back of the clamp. The glue is setting now, so I'll try it out tomorrow.
I used aluminum, because i had some...
It looks like more than cork is needed, at least on the back. Here's a couple of pictures.

If you look closely, you can see how the bevel affects the clamping surface.
Soliver,
I bet that would work. I'll have to take a look at the armrest & bracket to confirm that there's enough length on the mounting screws. I wonder if the top of the armrest needs a similar...
I have a McClung armrest for my Phoenix mandolin and I really like the way it makes my picking hand move around the mandolin. There's only one problem- it doesn't clamp quite right to the top/back....
You could try listening to the Blue Sky Boys for ideas. Lots of cool accompaniment going on, and you can clearly hear the mandolin. Lots of short arpeggios, some tremolo, etc.
I was at this show too! It was great, Michael did a really nice job playing on the Statman originals. Hopefully you can post some video footage.
Awesome I'm glad to hear you love your phoenix select post a pic of it. Your probably right about the high action making an instrument feel stiff and I'm not a very big fan of a high action. Where...
I have one. It sounds awesome, not tinny at all. It's very full and rich sounding. It does perhaps feel a bit stiff, but the action is set higher than my lost mandolin. I think the higher action is...
well the Gallatin has a satin nitro lacquer. I have that finish on a martin DR and it is really nice looking. The downside with satin finishes is that they show scratches and dirt a little more. For...
I had really good results removing the thick finish from a cheapy yamaha guitar. It made a huge difference in the sound. To my ears it "opened up" the sound, it felt like the instrument was less thin...
