  1. Re: Playing a triplet over 2 quarter notes.

If the tempo is brisk you just feel it, but at slower tempi the pros actually subdivide in their heads. In this case you "hear" triplets for each quarter note (12 for the whole measure), and then...

    Re: Humbuckers

Side-by-side is louder, stronger signal. I have both from Steve Ryder, using same pole pieces in the two types.

    Pete's are plenty loud.

Re: Feedback on a magnetic pickup

While a fully acoustic instrument can still feedback with magnetic pickups (e.g. Beatles' "I Feel Fine") it is less likely as the feedback route is indirect, unlike with a contact pickup on the top....

  5. Re: Pick Choice on Electric Mandolin vs Acoustic

I had been using 1.0mm Ultex on both but have shifted to lighter, .73mm on acoustic and .60 on electric.

While the stiffer pick yields a darker tone it is too much attack on the electric, and a...
  6. Re: Anyone compared Fender 346 EXTRA HEAVY with Blue Chip CT55

Yep, Fender wears fast. Dunlop Ultex 1.0 mm will not wear out nearly as fast, likely will last a few sessions. Very tough material, at about the price as Fender. Clear, strong tone.

    Re: 10-string mandolin

I think Mandobart might have a Jessen.

The factors to consider are scale length and body size and design. The floating bridge designs have more "pop" to the sound, and archtops are stronger in...

    Re: 10-string mandolin

If it is mandolin scale length it is a mandolin. They are fairly popular in choro, Brazilian makers have standard models. Tom Morton in Seattle makes a metal-body resonator type. Thomas Buchanan in...

Re: Pedal Board Show & Tell

Recorded two albums using it. It tends to bump up the midrange, thus the EQ. For an analog pedal it is pretty configurable. Waiting list for new ones, I think, but that was back some years ago,...

Re: Pedal Board Show & Tell

    202365

No board, and no pedals for my acoustic with built-in Headway pickup.

This is the electric rig, EQ to tame the midrange (cut at 800 Hz), AnalogMan overdrive (two sides for two levels),...

    Re: help with feedback

It's a slight digression, but as I noted above, piezos straight into a tube amp are not inherently a problem. In the 70s we plugged our Barcus-Berry or Fishman pickups into our Twin Reverb amps. It...

    Re: help with feedback

Tube amps only limit (technically not compression) when clipping, overdriven.

In my experience, electric-loud bands will require a bridge pickup for useful signal above feedback. Drew Emmitt of...

Re: Amplifying a violin in an electric combo

The Fishman pickup that wedges easily into the bridge cutout is the best option, but will need significant EQ, so a preamp will also be needed. The sound from a bridge pickup is not the acoustic...

  17. Re: Tested: Where Does The Tone Come From In An Electric Guitar?

The instrument behaves much like its acoustic response in regards attack and sustain. I had this exact situation, using my favorite mag pickup on a Buchanan 10-string (my earlier acoustic-electric...
  18. Re: Tested: Where Does The Tone Come From In An Electric Guitar?

The issue should be of interest to e-mando players, but this video misses the main points about pickups.

We can agree it matters where, along the string, you pick. It also matters, where, along...

Re: doing pizzicato in a piece

Muting at the bridge is one method, not the only one. The goal is a short note, fast decay.

A muting style with more "pop" is fingering lightly just on top of the fret.

    The left hand technique...

Re: Better Tone & Volume above the 12th fret?

Is your fingerboard flat, i.e. no bowing? Sounds like too little height in those high frets, which occurs if the fingerboard rises. If there is bowing, "relief", the comfortable string height for the...
