Re: Another Cool Looking A (?) Model

Welcome back, Murray. I hope you weren’t insulted by our comments. All were tempered by recording limitations. I will definitely go to listen to your current recordings.

    Re: "Powerful/Loud!"

If I want loud to overpower and annoy other acoustic (and even electric) instruments then I play my National RM-1. I do like the sound though as well. However my overall mandolin of choice is the...

    Re: 1910 Mandolin

Here are the other photos. No one replied to that thread so I linked people to this thread.

BTW the label seems to read 1911 not 1910 at least to my eyes. Looks like a nice Raffaele Calace signed...

No need to have two threads. Some folks have replied to this other thread in Vintage Instruments.
  6. Re: Forty progressive studies for the mandoline, Op. 50 - G Hucke

Another good collection of Progressive Etudes for Mandolin is by Sol Goichberg. He played at one point with the New York Mandolin Orchestra and when I was still playing with them his wife Fanny...

  8. Re: Tip: Replacing Book Bindings with Spiral Bindings

I also printed it double-sided but Staples or Kinko's said it was too large for one book. I guess there are coils that will handle larger books but maybe whoever did it for me did not deal with those.

    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

Ok, Tonydxn et al: after you solve this luthiery puzzle the next level it to create a fan-fret Gelas model mandolin. I think I might have to take some dramamine for that one. :)

    Here's our friend...
  10. Re: Any tips on this technique before breaking into a tune?

    Same as Lawrence Welk's "A-one-a-and-a-two-a."
  11. Re: Forty progressive studies for the mandoline, Op. 50 - G Hucke

These would be a good way for you to learn to read notation. And if you are familiar with fiddle tunes, you might also use some fiddle tune book like Ryan's Mammoth Collection all in notation to read...
  12. Re: Forty progressive studies for the mandoline, Op. 50 - G Hucke

Thanks again, Eoin, for posting this scan. I just read through the first handful of etudes and one warning. The plates they printed this might have gotten worn down a bit from multiple printings...
  13. Re: Tip: Replacing Book Bindings with Spiral Bindings

There is a great Irish tune book from a session in Kingston, Canada. I think it is over 500 pages in total. I think the limit to spiral/coil binding might be ~250 pages so I had to split it into two...

    Re: Tenor banjo help

How old it this tenor? Does it have a skin head on it? An old loose skin head would definitely sound muddy.

In any case—skin or plastic—see how it does with the head tighter. Hopefully that patch...
  16. Re: What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

Unless you have a Guitar Center where you live that has an excellent luthier I would steer clear. The one I go to has a young woman with an attitude who might know how to set up an electric guitar....

    Re: Piccolo (Soprano) Mandolins

I don't have any modern versions just vintage ones. Here are my two pictured with a standard Vega bowlback. The Vega on the left next to a Leland piccolo (Lyon & Healy around 1913) and a no-name...

I hesitate to quote the lyrics: “Fire on the mountain, run boys run...” :)

Congratulations in any case. It looks lovely.

Seller says: “Mandolin. Will post pictures in next couple of days.” Brand is Rocket.
