  1. Re: how to back up a finger pickin' guitar player?

Maybe just some two note chords, or single-note ascending or descending patterns? Sometimes some really simple minimal things just to help maintain rhythm or suggest the harmony without doing much...
  2. Re: Amplifiers/pdeals for playing in an electric band

I like using a compressor when playing with a loud band, it helps equalize volume levels when switching between playing single-note lines and chords. I'd also repeat the recommendation of an eq...

Re: Etiquette for buying a mandolin on-line

I remember seeing a violin shop that would ship instruments to you on a rent or buy option. There was a rental period (a week? a month?, something like that), after which you either purchased it...
  4. Re: Why do some higher end mandos return to the market so quickly

I played in a band with a guitar who bought and sold a guitar pretty much every month. It think it was just his thing in the world, he was always super enthused about each guitar, and none of them...

Re: Getting the “chop” from a flat top?

If you are close enough to a store that carries some serious carved top mandolins, go play, and listen, to some different mandolins. Good carved top mandolins have a "pop" to them that is different...

Re: What PA gear brands do you favor?

I have a couple of RCF 10 inch speakers, very clear, lots of headroom. The QSC 10 is also great. I have a couple of altos 10 inch we use as monitors, they are okay.

    The soundcraft UI mixers...

    Re: Gig Bag Recommendation Please

I have one of the foam gator bags, inexpensive, reasonably sturdy. You would not want to baggage check it, safe enough for most other situations. I carry a fender acoustic/electric in it. I...

Re: All Blues - Miles Davis

This is such a great tune....

The notation F/D indicates a F chord over a D in the bass, this is sometimes called a slash chord

Looking at the notes we have: D, then F A C. This could...

Re: When to upgrade from beginner mandolin?

I have regretted buying a number of inexpensive (cheap) instruments, but never a good one. I greatly prefer to buy used, and don't mind some scuffs and scars, which brings the cost of...

Re: DO I need a better mandolin?

Yep, try to get that stage around $2k-$3k where you can find potential lifetime instruments used from small makers or flatiron, weber, Northfield, Collings etc. These will tend to be A body and used,...

Re: First mandolin for a Metalhead

Do a bit of listening on Youtube to the sounds of electric and acoustic mandolins. Listen to the sound of f hole vs open hole mandolins from the same maker and roughly the same price range. ...

    Re: help with feedback

For playing with a really loud electric band, I use a relatively cheap Fender Robert Schmidt mandolin, which has a piezo pickup in the bridge. It needs a lot of eq help to sound reasonable, but...

Re: True market value of a Collings mt gt

Well, dealers seem to sell used instruments at roughly 2/3 the current new price of the same instrument for most instruments, so 2/3 of $3725 is $2483.

But that 2/3 is just a ballpark, Collings...

    Re: Harsh amplified tone

Either a pre-amp or a graphic eq pedal will help a lot.

You do need to practice with them though to learn how to use them quickly. Do you know anybody who owns a PA who would let you practice...

Re: Should I make it a mando or an octave?

At that length, go for the octave mandolin tuning, it should work fine. The Trinity College octave mandolin I have has a 20 inch scale and works fine, I preferred with relatively heavy strings on...

    Re: Mando Tone

After seeing Bill McCall's comment above about just how much the player matters in a demo recording of a mandolin, I went to youtube and listened to a number of demos of different mandolins from a...
  17. Re: Do you take your best or most valuable mandolin to gigs?

No, the best instruments just don't go to dive bars, and I used to play dive bars, alternative music clubs. Loud, a bit rough, but a lot of fun. I have inexpensive but serviceable instruments...

    Re: Should I trade up?

You can learn a lot on it and have fun with it. With at least the solid top, this could serve your needs for quite a while. If you wait a bit to upgrade, you'll have a better understanding of...

    Re: trouble strumming

Make sure your mandolin is well set up, small changes in the nut matter greatly on a mandolin.

As time goes by, I'm finding I use bar chords less and less. Two and three-note chords seem to...

Re: Tips for chording with a hard(ish) pick?

I used to have this problem, I don't seem to any more. But, when this was happening to me, I found the Blue Chip picks to be easier to keep in place than anything else I tried. They are...
  21. Re: Does this guitar speed picking technique work for mando?

I'd have to agree that that down-down-up is not a particularly efficient pattern. If you can get the sound you want on a tune using more efficient picking, then I"m all for that! My comment was...
  22. Re: Does this guitar speed picking technique work for mando?

Some of the picking patterns used are not about speed, but about sound. The down down up pattern sounds different than the down up down pattern. So that's part of what is going on.

    Re: Intonation Mystery

Strings too high off the fingerboard at the nut cause this effect, as mentioned earlier. That might not be your problem, but I've seen it on many, many instruments.

Good luck with it, if it's...
