Re: is the mandola the perfect instrument?

Thanks so much Dave for the nice comment. We do travel a fair amount and are always looking for new places to play. There are so few places that accept original music. In Chicago, it's 95% cover...

Re: is the mandola the perfect instrument?

Interesting topic. I think I would have to agree. I have a mandolin, mandola, octave mandolin, irish bouzouki (2), and a mandocello. For what I do (very non-traditional) I find the mandola to be the...

    Re: Grommet placement

I use a leather lace interwoven between strings behind the bridge. No more trying to find a grommet when I break a string. Works great. I also use a piece of black felt right behind the nut to cut...
  4. Re: Northfield vs. Northfield and Northfield vs. Gibson compariso

I owned a Big Mon for a couple years. I went to Morgan Music in the fall of 2016 while I was on tour specifically to play and buy one of the newer Northfields. Fit and finish was always great. I just...

Re: Live Mic for Mandolin Recommendations

    Hey Craig,
I wrote about this a bit in an older post:

Re: NIBD (New Irish Bouzouki Day)

There is a gigantic difference between the two. The Petersen is more delicate. it has the octave courses and a fairly shallow body; probably 2.5" if i remember correctly. The Crump is big sounding....

    NIBD (New Irish Bouzouki Day)

After wanting one for ten years, I finally got a Crump Irish Bouzouki. This is the real deal. Huge sound and great playability. I've only seen a few for sale in the last 10 years and I always missed...

Re: Anyone own an Eastman MDO 305 or 605?

I had an Eastman MDO305 for about a year. Playability and feel were great. As stated, It has a thinner nasally quality that does cut through. I needed something a bit fuller sounding so I picked up a...

Re: Experience of short scale bouzouki?

I always think of Irish bouzoukis as flat top A style with an oval hole. An octave mandolin would be a carved top and slightly shorter scale. I have had a couple of both. They cover the same ground...

Re: New OM day, and some questions about others

Thanks for the update on your journey. I have an Eastman, bought a Weber Bitterroot A20-F and still keep thinking about looking for more. For me, I did like the scale and playability of the Eastman...

    New Octave Mandolin Day!

I'm kind of excited. I got two things this week. One was Covid (not good) and the other was a new octave mandolin. It's a Weber Bitterroot A20-F. I had to wait a few days till I had the energy to...

    Re: Mandola string advice sought

I have a Collings mandola and I use EJ76 on it. I really like the extra pop the medium gauge strings give it. Possibly too heavy for a flat top, but even then, I used them on a Weber flattop and they...

Re: OM, What pick thickness do you use?

I use the Primetone 1.5mm picks on all mandolin family instruments. Works well for me.

    Re: Micawber Mandolins

Did a little more research. The Micawber octave mandolin appears to be an Afanti, from China. They will customize the build to anything you want. Comparing the stock Afanti and the Micawber, I see he...

I just saw these online. I've been looking for an octave mandolin that sounds better than the Eastman I have. If anyone gets one, please post a review. I was looking for a Weber Yellowstone Octave...

Re: New OM day, and some questions about others

I too have the Eastman. It's fun to play and I actually like the longer scale length. As stated, the problem is the thinner sound o the lower strings. I have been looking for a long time for a way to...

Re: New OM day, and some questions about others

I could be wrong, but I thought with Eastman the higher numbers were for more appointments: better looking wood and bindings. Some people have noted that some lower level models occasionally sound...
  20. Re: Carter Vintage Guitars is now Carter Vintage Exchange

Wow. Not my experience at all there. I was there a couple weeks ago and was treated very poorly. I wish I had met the Carters. They sound very nice. I don't believe either of them was in the shop the...

    Re: Pick Talk

When I had a fairly bright Weber mandolin, I used the rounded Golden Gate picks. They helped tame the treble and warmed up the tone. Since I got my Gibson ern, I've only used the 1.5 Primetone picks....

    Re: Compressor?

It may even it out slightly, but really, magnetic pickups do not work well on a mandolin. The A strings will always be the loudest, due to their diameter. The wound strings never get picked up all...
