Re: Playing the Mandolin with a Bow

Guitarists in prog and alternative bands have done it for years. If you like the sound and it fits with what you want to do then go for it.

    Re: "Mandolin Hacks"

When I was still playing in bands I would always take two guitars with me to a gig in case I broke a string mid-set. Quicker to swap guitar than change a string when you only have half an hour to...

    Re: Exercises for artificial harmonics

A pinch harmonic is a different thing and is quite difficult to achieve satisfactorily on an acoustic instrument. To do it you roll the pad of your thumb over the point of your pick and dig into the...

Re: Guitar site good as MandolinCafe?

I've been frequenting the Acoustic Guitar Forum recently. It's got a great big selection of sub-forums to browse and is pretty active throughout the day:...
  7. Re: so, do any of you use a chart book when gigging?

He does, like many singers these days, already use an autocue on stage. Usually these are on the floor by the stage monitors. The problem seems to be that while big acts get away with this as they...

Re: Selecting a first step upgrade in the UK

There's a shop in the town where I live which I know has a couple of the Eastman models in stock and it's taking a lot of restraint for me not to go down there for a gander tomorrow.

    Going to have...

Re: Selecting a first step upgrade in the UK

    Congrats! That looks lovely.

This thread has had me considering a similar leap from my Ozark all week. Probably need to wait until later in the year though.
  10. Re: A tip for improving your playing in one hour...

My copy of the Sonatas and Partitas for Mandolin transcription arrived yesterday so I spent some time last night picking over the first few pages. I was pleasantly surprised by just how achievable it...

Re: Selecting a first step upgrade in the UK

That price scares me, Hobgoblin are selling the same model for £699. I'd be hugely skeptical of what would turn up in the post at that price.

    Re: Mandolin on the Oscars

Well in terms of MeToo/Times Up it's an issue which directly involves the Academy members so if they didn't embrace it they would look even more out of touch and behind the times than usual.

    Re: Mandolin on the Oscars

Maybe he thought it would be fun? Apparently he played on the studio version of the track (uncredited) so I imagine he's friends with Sufjan and was offered first refusal to play the piece live.

  18. Re: so, do any of you use a chart book when gigging?

Coming from a rock background, in local band circles it would be seen as a major weakness to have the words, a chord sheet or notation in front of you. Yet once a band gets to arena size no-one can...

Re: String And Pick Gauges For Irish/Scottish Trad

I've always preferred stiff picks to thin flexible ones. Used Dunlop 1.14 delrins for years and years on my guitars and mandolin, but recently switched to a 0.88 Dunlop Jazz III for both and find the...

    Re: Seeking Video Advice

Record audio on the tablet of you playing the chords, play it back through the aux of the amp and play the melody over the top while you video it with your phone.

Re: Road To Banff / Spey In Spate

Spey in Spate is a James Scott Skinner tune. If you want to hear it played competently Nicola Benedetti played it on her recent album of Scots classical and traditional music.

Road To Banff / Spey In Spate

I'm doing a year long project to record a song (or set) each week. It's been a while since I did a mandolin set for it but last night I did the Road To Banff and Spey In Spate. Really struggled to...
