    Re: Gibson Mandolin Style A4

I really think that most of these Gibsons if they are in good shape will not be parted out unless someone gets it for seriously low money. There is a black A-4 from 1911 on reverb now priced at...

    Re: the Nakano Collection

I did download a lot of the pieces labeled with Japanese characters figuring they might have some use. I seem to recall that some were handwritten arrangements it transcriptions of music possibly...

Also, be aware that all the compositions of Raffaele Calace are freely available on the FMI site.

    Re: the Nakano Collection

I was wondering, Martin, about what, if anything was added. I, too, downloaded the whole site before it was removed. I will have to check the new reincarnation.

Re: Cracks between ribs on bowlback

I agree with Eugene. And fluted ribs puts it in the higher end. The insides of these were often lined with wood shavings so you may be seeing that with the second photo. You might look inside with a...

    Re: Gibson Mandolin Style A4

Look inside the sound hole. There should be a stamped number inside on the neck block. That is the FON. There should also be a serial number on the label if there is one although sometimes they get...
  7. Re: 1st Mandolin. Purchase Nice Bandolim or Eastman MD505? TYIA

Who is the Brazilian luthier you are considering? In addition to shipping costs you also have to factor in US Custom charges age dealing with CITES regulations depending on the woods this luthier...
  8. Re: 1st Mandolin. Purchase Nice Bandolim or Eastman MD505? TYIA

There are members here who play both of the makers above as their main instruments. I think Tom Wright plays a Buchanan 10-string.

Re: ID help for this mystery machine please

No confusion. That is our MC member Martin Jonas playing a recent American made mandolin by a company currently called Big Muddy.

Re: ID help for this mystery machine please

I agree with the folks who commented already. It does bear resemblance to some lower-end Levin (Swedish) mandolins from the 1940s-50s, but they didn't make this one.
  11. Re: 1st Mandolin. Purchase Nice Bandolim or Eastman MD505? TYIA

If you are mostly interested in choro and you have the cash for a custom instrument the bandolims are quite nice though very different from more standard American-style mandolins. They use lighter...
  12. Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

I had one of these, probably made by L&H, lovely inlay, but price is astronomical. About 4 or 5% of that price would be optimistic. Granted, it does look like it is in excellent condition, but...
  13. Re: Possible bargain 30's Strad-O-Lin near Bend, OR

Fake grain on the back. I would guess lower end model possibly laminated but also possibly not. Might be worth a shot at that price.

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

Mine is also super clean. Didn’t even need any goings-over by my luthier. With Dogal Calace RW92b strings sounds as good as any bowlback. Sings so sweetly.

Will Smith: I believe I was right that yours is a style 2. I scanned the models 1-5 pages from the copy of my 1910-5 Vega catalog with specs and prices. Attached is a pdf.

Re: Help identifying possibly vintage mandolin

I don't have any of that maker in my files. Another guess is that it was made for a shop by one of the other makers in Napoli back then. It was made in the Vinaccia style. It looks like it is in...

    J. C.: your clarifying what your musical background and experience makes a big difference. I think many of us were assuming a deep dive into classical playing on a serious level. A lot may apply...

I am no master of classical music or pedagogy but the prime thing is to realize that in general these pieces that we play on mandolin are not so different from the fiddle tunes many of us folk types...

Re: Process of learning a classical tune

Eugene covers this quite well. Unless this is 12-tone or other complex modern music it should work the way that any music would. I also feel though that if you get the piece memorized in your year...

David: yes you are probably correct. I was being optimistic. Frankly, that is probably one of the last ones I would sell partly because it was such a bargain and a fine sounding instrument.

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

Absolute best strings are Dogal Calace RW92b dolce. I never thought much of American vintage bowlbacks until I got that Vega and tried those strings. Worth it to try out. You might even enjoy playing...
