  1. Re: I know that tune... um... how's it go again?

I'm assuming your songbook only has lyrics and chords, but no notes?

What I find helpful is to write down just the first few notes of each song or tune. If I forget how a tune goes, a super-quick...

  3. Re: Help! I can't hear the beat when I play a break

    Thanks David and Randi! :)

Also it seems that there's yet another (maybe more formal??) name for lead-in notes or pick-up notes: anacrusis. Although I've never heard any of my ragtag...
  4. Re: Help! I can't hear the beat when I play a break

I grew up hearing them referred to as "lead-in" notes, but in more recent years have also heard them called "pick-up" notes. Never heard anyone say "pick-up" notes until modern times, the first time...

    Re: Notation Software?

Well, for what it's worth, my tutorial of Musescore 2.1 basics, attempts to get right to the point, showing how to write a simple melody - these are the basics I use for writing fiddle tunes and...
  9. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

Yep. :mandosmiley: Electric anything is great for my aged arthritic fingers (after many decades of playing strictly acoustic-only everything).

    Super-light-gauge electric single strings that...

    Re: Random mandolin sightings

Today I was surprised to see a mandolin/mandola/pear-shaped instrument in a giant two-story-tall mural :disbelief:  painted on the side of a building in Aberdeen WA. At first I couldn't tell...

Interesting! Not my type of music either, but they seem to have done alright with it, they seem to be very capable musicians. (I wouldn't be able to play all those way up high on the neck...
  12. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

:)) Yeah... and back when those things were current and unavoidable in the major publications, it seemed like time stopped and dragged on forever. :sleepy: I was glad to see those bright colors go...
  13. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Late '90s, actually. :) "Bondi Blue" iMac (middle pic) came out in 1998, fruit colors (top pic) were announced in early 1999 (more info here). But that minor detail aside, I see your point! :) :))...

Sticky: Re: Thread for Social Group MP3 posting

Disregard my link above, wrong thread. Updated to my tentative experimental (read: probably contains errors) :)) chord-exploration video also at Song-A-Week 500 - Westphalia Waltz.
  16. Re: “Never grow old” bluegrass instrumental

Super nice!! :mandosmiley: And that song is one of my all-time favorites too, thus I often have unrealistically high expectations for any new versions of it, but your band does a great job with it....

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

I basically had in mind for commonly-seen minors to be included in the "etc" portion of my "I-IV-V etc" phrase, but yeah I agree with you that sometimes the most-obvious first choice isn't...

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

As to writing down the notes that form chords - I was not referring to the I-IV-V etc chords, which (at this point, for me anyway) are fairly obvious just by listening - no need to diagram those out...

  25. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

U.S. didn't dive into WWII whole-hog until late in 1941. Then things ramped up for the war effort.

That is relevant since Gibson is a U.S. company and, in 1939 AFAIK there was *not* yet any...
